The Minsk Yizkor Book quoted on the 'About' section says: "Rabbi Leibl Baal Hatosafot (The grandfather of Rabbi Aryeh Leib the author of Shaagat Arye: Rabbi Aryeh Leib ben Asher, "Shaagas Aryeh" A.B.D. Minsk, Volozhin, Metz)". Otser HaRabanim says the father of Shaagat Aryeh is: Asher b. Shaul b Naphtali Hirsch (# 3250, # 3473, # 17950). Could it be that Rabbi Leib "Baal HaTosafot" is not the grandfather of Shaagat Aryeh but is a grand uncle instead?:

There his been some back and forth on this question in the revisions, and nobody seems to be including any sources. I have yet to see any sources showing that he is the son of Naphtali Hirsch Gunzberg. I believe the confusion arises from the Minsk Yizkor Book quoted in 'About' section of Rabbi Leib "Baal HaTosafot" which says the latter is the grandfather of Shaagat Aryeh, who Oster says is the great grandson of Naphtali Hirsch Gunzberg. The Minsk Yizkor Book read in conjunction with Otser supports the conclusion that HaTosafot is the son of Naphtali Hirsch Gunzberg, but only if one changes what is in Otser, Otser HaRabanim states that the grandfather of Shaagat Aryeh is Shaul b. Naphtali Hirsch Gunzberg and not a Leyb. There is no son Leyb shown for Naphtali Hirsch Gunzberg in Otser HaRabanim # 16100.

Unless someone has a source perhaps they should be disconnected until a source appears?

I don't know how to resolve the conflict over the father of Shaagat Aryeh: the Minsk book says he is Asher b. Leyb (HaTosafot) b. Not Stated and Otser says Asher b. Shaul b Naphtali Hirsch.

Have you seen the document referred to in the curator note?

Yes, thank you Samuel. I have now looked at the article and it confirms what I said yesterday: there are no solid sources confirming that Shaagat Aryeh descends from the Gunzberg family (the only one I know of is Otser HaRabanim which may have been repeating the misinformation, as stated in the article). So my question is why does GENI still show that his grandfather Rabbi Leib "Baal HaTosafot" is the son of Rabbi Naftali Hirsch Günzburg ?

Further: based on Footnote 59 of the article, both Asher b Shaul and Asher b Leyb were brothers-in-law of Knesset Yekhezkel: "Indeed, there were two geniuses named R. Asher at that time, and both of them were brothers-in-law to the genius R. Yehezkel Katzenlenpuygen of Knesset Yehezkel. The first is Rabbi Asher Ginzburg Abd Pinsk and Vizon, he was the son of the genius Rabbi Shaul Ginzburg Abd Pinsk...His second brother-in-law was R. Asher Abd Minsk, who was the son of Rabbi Liv the Tosafot Abd Minsk..." At the moment on GENI, the spouse of Asher b Leyb is given as Daughter of Joel Sirkis Wife of Asher Actually, per "Rabbi Arieh Yehuda Leib (1713) (the grandson of Rabbi Joel Sirkis), who wrote the book Shaagat Arieh": https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol5_00226.html. So it remains unclear to me whether in fact Aryeh b. Leyb was a brother-in-law of Knesset Yekhezkel. As for Aryeh b. Shaul he is indeed shown as being a brother-in-law of Knesset Yekhezkel at this moment: R' Asher Günzburg, A.B.D. Vizin and Pinsk

Thanks goodness, that the whole situation may be resolved simply on GENI, if Rabbi Leib "Baal HaTosafot" is disconnected from Rabbi Naftali Hirsch Günzburg and for now leave unanswered the question of whether Aryeh b. Leyb was also married to a sister of Knesset Yekhezkel. What do you think?

Have you looked through that whole article? Tree's a mess! Aryeh Leyb's mother was a Katzenellenbogen, not a Sirkis.

I read the section about Shaagas Aryeh and the footnotes to that section. In their i see that it is asserted Shaagas Aryeh's mother was a sister of Knesset Yekhezkel. Have you checked with the Unbroken Chain 3rd Edition to see if that sister and marriage are asserted there?

I haven't

I hope someone who has the UC 3rd volumes can check to see if the in-law connection from Shaagat Aryet to Knesset Yekhezkel is there. I would feel safer is there were another independent source asserting this connection. My guess is that it won't be there because most of the UC entries have been incorporated into GENI. This being so, I guess the thing to do is to include both spouses of Asher b. Leyb on GENI: a) a sister of Knesset Yekhezkel (source: DovBerish Weber: https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000101019719892&amp), and b) a daughter of Yoel Sirkis (source: Brest Chapter of Pinkhas HaKellilot Polin: https://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_poland/pol5_00226.html), unless you believe the Polin source can be disregarded. If so, then please disconnect the daughter of Yoel Sirkis from Asher b. Leyb and I will write a note on her profile stating the information from the Pinkhas.

Polin source can be disregarded. It's referring to a different Shaagas Aryeh - Rabbi Aryeh Leib Yehuda Sirkis Yaffe who was a grandson of Rabbi Yoel ben Shmuel Sirkis, "The Bach"
I've made some changes. More to come, when I have time. Please write the notes.

Excellent.
