According to the VoC document his name was Barent Búrgertsz (on the index to folio 153) out of Halberstad, Germany. He was commissioned as a soldier at the age of 18 (if born in 1668) on the ship "Huis te Zilverstein" on Friday, 24 May 1686. He resigned from the VoC on Thursday, 24 April 1687 after arriving at the Cape of Good Hope.
If this information is credible could you please update the Geni profile accordingly. Barend is my 7th great grandfather.

Barend Burger 1
blacksmith, farmer at Drakenstein 2
of Leeuwensjagt and Landeskroon, Paarl Diamant 3
Heemraad at Drakenstein (between 1699 and 1701) 4
died 1705, (before 7th August) 5
Inventory of Estate dated at 5 october 1705
Notes:
There are several examples of his signature extant - I cannot decide
if he signs his name Barendt or Berndt. His surname he consistenly
signs as Borghert or Borchert. Since his children all signed their
surname as 'Burger' and the Dutch records always give his name as
Barend, I have comprimised and use the form of his name above.
He first appears in the muster rolls and the Opgaaf (tax) rolls of 1688
living in the Cape district as a single man. He continues in the Cape
throught 1690 and 1691 but in these years no wives were listed and
then in 1692 we find him with his wife, named as Maria Schalk and
one child. In the opgaaf rolls of 1692, he is also listed together with
his wife and one child, still living in the Cape District.
From 1693 they appear to be living in Drakenstein, still with one child
in that year, with two sons in 1695. In 1698 they have three chldren
and in 1700 four sons.
In the muster rolls dated 23 January 1701, they have 5 children.
The Opgaaf of 1705, usually in December, lists the widowed Marretie
with five sons and one daughter, and the Inventory drawn up after in
October 1705, after the death of Barend, confirms that their were six
children then living.
The children are given here as traditionally attributed to this couple
and in the traditional order. I have tried to find what evidence exists
and feel that that this construction of the family is probably correct.
Much of the evidence is, however, slender or conjectural. Please see
my notes on this subject.

Notes: Both the Estate Inventory, 1705, of Barend Burger and the Estate
Accounts of Marritje Willemsdr Schalk, 1710, mention that there
were six children to share the estate.
The Opgaafrollen (tax returns) record 4 sons in 1700 and 5 sons
and 1 daughter in 1705. From the Opgaaf evidence this son would
have been born after Barend but before Helena, but no closer
approximation is possible as yet.
