From Linda Wellman
I just joined a Jamestown descendants group, where i was informed that Col. John Flood never had a daughter named Mary Briggs. They cited "Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, VII, pp 28-29, where Jean Stephenson asserts that there was previously a misinterpretation of records.
Also, "Adventures of Purse abd Person" p 996 Thoughts?
Mary Briggs Currently shows on geni as daughter of Col. John Flood, of Jamestown & Margaret Flood
There’s debate at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Flood-75 on her origins.

According to Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia 1697-1624/5 by John Frederick Dorman, C.G., F.A.S.G. John Flood and Margaret Finch did not have a son John or daughter Mary. I think they should be disconnected unless someone has sources to prove otherwise.
There a number of references to Mary Flood, daughter of John Flood and Margaret Finch. Here is a document that indicates that Mary Flood married John Washington. Who is this Mary if not John Flood’s daughter.
"John Washington, a merchant of Surry County, Virginia, entered into a prenuptial agreement with the widow “Mary Ffoord” dated November 15, 1658: Bee it known unto all men by these presents, yt whereas a Contract of matrimony is agreed upon between mee Jno Washington, & Mary Ffoord widow, I ye sd Washington ffor divers good Causes & Considerations, mee thereunto moving doe before ye Celebration & Slemnization thereof, by these presents Ingage & oblige my self, my heires, executors, Administrators or Assignes, to give & deliver, or Cause to be given & delivered unto Robert Stanton Clarke, ffeoffe, in trust, one mare ffilly, of one year old, to & ffor ye sole use & behoofe of Tho: blunt, sonne of ye sd Mary, his heires executors, Administrators & assigns, with male & female Increase ffor Ever, wch ad mare ffille is to be delivered as above sd ye day yt ye sd Tho: Blunt shall attain to ten years of age, in Surry county, & further I ye sd Jno Washington Doe hereby oblidge my self, to acknowledge this my reall & voluntary act, & deed, in ye next Court, to be holden ffor ye County of surry, & to have it recorded accordingly, in ye sd Court records, witt: my hand & seal Dated ye 15th day of 9ber stilo Anglia ano: domeni 1.6.5.8.

It is explained in Adventurers and Persons on page 996 that Mary “fford” was misread as Mary “floord”. Is there another source that shows she is the daughter of John Flood. According to Purse and Person, John had three children, Thomas, Jane, and Walter.

Other speculative children:
Mary Flood. She is first noted in 1650, when she was sponsored for transport from England to Virginia by Capt John Flood, Gent., and John Flood, of James City County.[10] (They also sponsored several other persons that year.[10]%29 It has been inferred that Mary was his daughter with Margaret, who had been sent to England for schooling and was being brought back to Virginia. (Possibly she was sent after her mother died, partly to help care for her.)[2] More recent review suggests she was not their daughter.[7]

116 EARLY VIRGINIA IMMIGRANTS
Flood, Mary, 1650, by Capt. John Flood, Gent., and Jno. Flood, James City Co.
Of interest to me because James Flood of Jamestown is a paternal ancestor for my son
My son has DNA matches on Ancestry who are descendants of Mary (Flood) Briggs, but...even if she's not the daughter of the parents connected to her on Geni, he'd still be a DNA match to her descendants because the DNA match is from one of those junctions where he's related to both parents of a person in the connecting lines.
For example, I'm a DNA match with Mary's descendant Faitha Edmunds but the DNA match is on the line of Faitha's husband John Ballard, which is on my side instead of my son's paternal Flood side.
Still, I'll be interested to know what you conclude about Mary (Flood) Briggs so I can make any needed corrections to her connection in our Ancestry tree, as I currently have her as my son's paternal ancestral aunt.
