"Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States is your 15th cousin."
I am descended from most (if not all) of the same people -- some, like William the Conqueror and his descendant, King John I Lackland -- several times over.
Almost (if not all) every U S. President is related to each other, and I am related to almost every one of them, if not all.
I believe that if a person has Colonial American ancestry, they fit that profile, and the more Colonial American ancestry, the truer that is.
(Yes, I believe there IS -- or at least WAS -- a "bloodline" requirement for U.S. presidents.)
After all, we are descended fairly recently from only a few thousand people, and those few thousand had to marry SOMEBODY!
A fun fact:
The family of Jimmy Carter's cousin, Hodding Carter, has lived in my hometown of Hammond, LA for a long time.
My mother's great-grandfather, Leroy Thomas, was a founder, and streets there are named for him.
Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States is your fifth cousin twice removed.
You → Debra Kim Hayes GS3487094 (your mother) → Jack Evan Hayes (her father) → John Washington Hayes (his father) → Martha Georgiana Hayes (his mother) → George W. Helms (her father) → Joel Helms (his father) → Susannah Helms (his mother) → Sarah Helms (her sister) → Pamly Uriah Helms (her son) → Harriet Emily Gordy (his daughter) → James Jackson "Jim Jack" Gordy, Sr. (her son) → Bessie "Lillian" (Gordy) Carter (his daughter) → Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States (her son)
"(Yes, I believe there IS -- or at least WAS -- a "bloodline" requirement for U.S. presidents.)"
There are exactly three requirements in the U.S. Constitution re: presidential qualification:
No bloodline requirements, thankfully. :)
Hi Judith Arnett,
Almost everyone on Geni is related if they have a fairly accurate and extensively filled out tree. Most everyone can go back to some kinds of royal houses as the generational fact of multiple grandparents kicks in and we have more chances to "win that lottery" with every generation we can confirm on Geni. Though most of us tend to view it all with a side-eye. Most of us would be too far away in line to inherit a castle.
All those metaphors aside, it isn't a conspiracy that most of the presidents are related to each other or to royalty or to all of us. Heck, you and I are 17th cousins. :-) That is the purpose of the Geni World Tree - to figure out how we are all connected.
Yes, I understand what you are saying, but if you think about it, the presidents aren't just related to English royalty, they're direct descendants.
And yes, I know that a lot of colonial families are, but a lot are not.
I wouldn't call it a conspiracy.
To those who make the decisions about who should lead the parties, that's simply as it should be, in their minds.
They believe it's the natural order, and they try hard to keep that order intact.
Just my opinion, for what it's worth.
President Carter was a cool person. Look at the life he lead. He accomplished so much, personally, professionally. Loved music. Thought outside the box. Took risks. Watch the clips of him, old ones, newer ones. He really enjoyed himself, his wife, the world.
Who cares about this "bloodline" nonsense? Stop it.
We should all live a life with so much love and kindness. He was fortunate, and he also gave so much back in his time here.
"And yes, I know that a lot of colonial families are, but a lot are not."
It would be nearly impossible to find a colonial family that didn't directly descend from European royalty. It's just a question of putting together the documentation.
Every single person with any European ancestry connects no further back than 600 years ago, and every single person on earth no further back than 900 years ago. Every person with a single line of European ancestry descends from Charlemagne. And it's nearly impossible to have British ancestry and not descend from King Edward III -- and that's just one monarch.
You can do the same thing with Latin Americans descending from Spanish and Portuguese royalty, Asians and Africans descending from ruling families there, etc.
So is it possible that there's some group that wants every U.S. president to come from a certain background? Sure -- but they wouldn't actually have to put much effort in.
Every pauper today comes from a prince somewhere back along the way. It's just math. And that's how you get a peanut farmer from rural Georgia rising to be president of the United States. :)
Here's a nice article about the Carter-Gordy connection: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/30/arts/music/jimmy-carter-berry-go...
Two highlights:
"You can imagine the shock and pride I felt when I discovered that President Jimmy Carter and I were actually third cousins. We had such fun discussing this in 1980 at a Democratic fund-raiser in Los Angeles. From that point on, we started calling each other ‘cuz.’" -- Gordy, in a statement to the NYT
and
"It is not the only surprising musical connection documented in Jeff Carter’s genealogy. One footnote states that Elvis Presley was the president’s 'sixth cousin once removed.'"
