I don't really know how this portal operates, but I can offer that Matthew Flinders was my 4th cousin x 6 removed...

Derek Richard Smith. Mandurah, Western Australia.

Derek Richard Smith I don't know how the portal really works either, but that information is so cool!!!

Derek,I hope,if u ever get a cat, that it will be a tuxedo,(the black cat with lower half of the face white and white neck and probably top of chest, and u call it Trim.MF had one, loved it so much that it is buried with him. there is a book written by a now deceased Australian author, called Mathew Flinder's Cat.Also, each year, there is a reenactment ceremony on an island a short ferry ride from shore, here, where I live in Cleveland,Queensland,Coochiemudlo Is. commemorating MF landing for ship repairs. He was an amazing man. There is lots in council libraries on him
You can ask any library in Aust to get a loan from another, free of charge..His journals and letters home to his wife are amazing.Cheers,Hilary Ikstrums.

I have no idea how I even got onto this portal. I have no relationship to my captain Flinders!

Derek Richard Smith I think Flinders was one of the world's greatest navigators. My great great grandfather had a family picture taken under the "Investigator tree" when it was still standing on Sweers Island. Flinders marked the tree in 1802. My GGGF was sub-collector of Customs and J.P. on Sweers from 1867 to 1873. Jules.

I watched a documentary of the digs in England to make make for the new fast railways and they found the grave of Matthew Flinders. It was really good and they found on his skeleton his breast plate. Cut and pasted for your info:-

Captain Matthew Flinders is buried in St James's burial ground in Euston, London. His remains were discovered in 2019 during excavations for the HS2 high-speed rail project.
Discovery:
Archaeologists working on the HS2 project discovered Flinders' remains in 2019.
The remains were identified by a lead breast plate on top of his coffin.
The discovery was made during excavations at St James's Gardens, a former burial ground.
Burial:
Flinders was buried in St James's burial ground on July 23, 1814.
His headstone was removed in the 1840s when Euston Station expanded into the burial ground.
Flinders' remains were reburied at St Mary and the Holy Rood Church in Donington on July 13, 2024.
Life:
Flinders was a Royal Navy explorer who led the first circumnavigation of Australia in 1801-3.
He is also credited with naming the country.
Flinders died of kidney disease in London in 1814 at the age of 40.
Matthew
Hioe you enjoy if you did not know this info.

Captain Matthew Flinders RN

Have you seen the video of his funeral at Dorrington in mid 2024. What a great honor for him, beautiful service.

Private User interestingly when I clicked on your link and brought Captain Matthew Flinders RN up it tells me I have a link....not a blood relationship..... to him through my aunts husband. I'm amazed to say the least.

Private User as more connections get added to Geni our relationships get closer and closer.

@robeenmt@gmail.com..Sadly, I can’t claim any connection with the very wonderful Captain Matthew Flinders, except for the fact that my forebears were residents of Sydney, Australia, from 1802 onwards so would have been aware of his explorations. The Wicklow Chief and his followers, however, would have been more concerned with staying alive at that time due to their humble status!

I don't think I am related to Matthew Flinders but he is certainly one of my heroes for his work in charting many parts of the Australian coastline. I believe some of his charts are still in use as they were so accurate. Thank you for the link to his profile Leanne M. Thank you also to Sandra Hemmings for the information about the finding of his remains.in 2019.

Matthew Flinders' people originate from Gedling, a small village outside the Town of Nottingham, England.
My Smith's originate from the small village of Arnold, a short distance from Gedling. Both villages are now suburbs of the City of Nottingham.
My 5th GGF was Samuel Flinders born 1717 at Gedling and died Nov 1800 at Arnold... My 4th GGF - William Smith born 6 March 1743 at Arnold married Samuel's daughter - Elizabeth Flinders born 1 March 1746 of Arnold.
It was John Flinders born 19 Dec 1682 at Gedling - Matthew's 2nd GGF, who moved his branch of the family to Donington in Lincolnshire...John was my 1st cousin x 9 removed.

Have enjoyed reading some history about Matthew Flinders and especially his your relationship with him Derek Richard Smith. I live on Bribie Island which was one of the many islands in Moreton Bay, Qld that he visited in 1799
