http://www.geni.com/discussions/92897?msg=689859 Could a curator who has had more sleep than I had last night take a look at this discussion? Thanks!

Please advise about this merge request... parentage worries me. Can a Mayflower curator please take a look and tell me what you think?

Thanks...

Sally, Here is a reference that says Elizabeth Fisher was the step-mother of Constance Snow (Hopkins). Her mother and Stephen's first wife was named Mary Unknown.

Please note that the Stephen Hopkins Master Profile was absolutely correct the last time I passed through it, with copious curator notes and multiple references to *the* best source on his parents - Caleb Johnson.

Change MP data / "main" data on pain of curator blast people! Mary Arnold is reporting correctly.

The Constance Snow (Hopkins) profiles need ***special attention*** in merging. There is a BAD MYTH still circulating of connection to the Dudleys -- DISPROVED. There were something like THREE Bethiah Hopkins, all from different families but unfortunately similar birth / death / locations, quite mixed up on internet sources. Be very careful there!

When in doubt join the "Stephen Hopkins" descendants project and check with your fellow descendants / managers. As mentioned Caleb Johnson, who did a recent biography on Hopkins, is *the* historical authority.

Mike Stangel

Thank you for your attention, Mike. I guess you did something because part of my tree is back although lots of data are still missing. Many profiles that had come back now have only the name. Photos, dates, places are disappeared. And even profiles that I had been created when I started the tree and are still not claimed by anyone, I have no access now.

I am going to write to Geni, I mean, to the programmers to report the last events.

I apologize for my poor English and also for asking for help in the wrong place. I had understood in the Geni’s help section that we should ask help to the curators when Geni do not allow to split trees. Take a look at http://help.geni.com/entries/432186-how-do-you-split-a-tree-if-a-tr...

Erica Howton

Thank you also, Erica. I really didn’t know that curators only work with public profiles; otherwise I would never bother you.

Just for the records:

1. I think it is an idea to check what is written in the geni’s help (link above) in order to avoid that others come here with problems like mine.

2. The profile merged in error that brought me here was probably merged by my elder sister that not knowing that the data bank is indexed by e-mail address put Lucia Motta’s email in her father-in-law’s profile. This was certainly a big mistake, but not all the old people deals great with technology…

3. I still have no idea why my tree had disappeared and brought back missing lots of data… So, sincerely, if I were you, spending so much efforts and time to refine the big-world-tree, I would be extremely worried in the confidence on this data bank.

My best wishes to you all.

Virginia

There are only a few "locked" curator profiles. In reality the profile "conflict data" is most often resolved by profile managers or their collaborators -- NOT curators.

The idea behind "curating is here" --

http://wiki.geni.com/index.php/Curators

As Bjorn said -- few curators, big tree, 55 million users. We all work together here. :)

Adriana

I sympathize! Geni does work hard to simplify the tree and the tools are getting better and better all the time, but its still a work in progress for all of us.

Also note that "public discussions" *is* a great place to ask for help from other users. There are quite a few who post regularly and have much more knowledge about issues likes yours from having gone through it themselves, and they're very helpful.

I haven't had that much experience within my own Family Group so I beg off. Do start your own discussion though!

I am careful that if I don't know the particulars, to only choose "correct" data that either has the proper spellings (i.e. Martha rather than Marhta when only one is spelled Marhta) or the locations identified accurately (i.e. Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA rather than Chicago, IL) or valid names not display names (first name doesn't include terms like "notorious pirate" or "witch").

You mean "notorious pirate" isn't a first name in Esparanto? Dang it. I wonder if I can go back and fix my autocomplete / tr8ns program.

Joking, people! Anita wrote it right. To the left, best data, most sensible date -- or look it up and make a note of your source in the "overview" if you correct it differently.

When I started merging I used a separate "online source" in another window as a proofreading tool. Helped quite a lot actually.

LOL Erica...I put that in there just for you...and a bit for Ben!

How about "The Notorious Oliver Cromwell"? :)

My big thing at this time is if it is a U.S. county, please include County in the name. When it all concatenates, it's difficult to tell the difference between X as a city and X as a county... particularly if the person has copied and pasted the entire place name in "Place Name" space. And of course if it's an Irish county put it as County X, rather than the US version, X County. (Obviously you can tell which part of the tree my head is buried in...)

Ben, keep giving us your great tips. I always appreciate it when I see what you have done with profiles I work on and how polished they end up after you have worked on them!

Unknown Profile

and

Margaret Allen Webb Smith

need to be merged. I manage one; I've put in a request for the merge, for collaboration, and to be added as a manager with the other manager, but have heard nothing back. She does not collaborate with anyone. None of her immediate family have claimed their profiles. She has not logged in since two days after joining last November. Is there anything else I should do, or is there a curator who can help me with the merge?

TIA for any assistance/advice you can offer!

May I have help with these two merges, as well, please? In both cases I've attempted to contact the manager (same person), who has been offline since December, and have heard nothing back. Again, I really appreciate any assistance!

Private and
Unknown Profile

Same manager as in the Margaret (Allen) Harris merge request, above:

Sarah Ann Hardy Allen and
Unknown Profile

This is why I am such a fervent supporter of the Collaboration Pool! /grin

I could also use help with merges on :

Jessie Blair and Jessie Magana

and

Christopher Magana and Christopher Magana

and

Caitlin Blair and Caitlin Anda

Still no answer on Collaboration. There are several other merges with the same manager.

Yeah, I've just found a few more of hers, as well!

FYI, David Alan Blair and I are cousins and have been collaborating on several of these profiles - he's actually the subject of one of the merges I requested (above)! Is there a curator who can assist us?

Private User & David Alan Blair,
all of those other profiles are private, and mostly being contemporary can't be made public. So we can't help with the actual merges. How closely related to them are you, because I *MIGHT* be able to assist IF they have ancestors with public records. I will take a deeper look ASAP.

David, in ANY case, it is best NOT to merge a duplicate with a so-called claimed profile, i.e. yours. Best to complete merges around it, and delete the duplicate.

Unknown Profile

Unknown Profile

I'm sorry to be dense, Shmuel, but I'm just learning! When I look at the two files I've listed here, I can't figure out how to tell that they're private. And how can *I*I see them if they're private? Neither is contemporary, so I'm afraid I simply don't understand... Help! ;)

Jennifer a PUBLIC profile has a small greenish globe next to the name. So if no globe, then the profile is private. We can all only see a limited view of these profiles, so the About Me is hidden and the names listed do NOT link to other profiles.

I sent you and David a private message regarding exactly how to proceed! I think with a little work, we can crack BOTH of these trees for you.

Thank you! I really appreciate your help.

Jean-Baptiste Frechette

Two locked historical profiles below this profile,

Mary - Marie and Joseph, below Jean are too contemporary. Sorry. The manager hasn't been on since October, but being a Pro, I imagine will be back... Try to message her.

Sally, can you edit the profile? If you can, just remove the extra g's from the middle name

I had edit rights and was able to remove the extra G's.

These folks are not my area of knowledge. Would someone who knows this line please take a look and see if this should be merged? It is on my merge list.
http://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000009085050309?return=merge_...

I removed the first match, looked really awful to me.

The second one needs someone who knows 3rd Sgt James Benham, b. 1745.

Trying to complete a merge can someone please help with this.
A lot of private profiles here. http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000000352360478?resolve=6... Manager hasn't been online since October 4, 2008 and has been reported.

Eldon, I can't help I don't have permission to view even, sorry.

OK, Thanks, Janet.
