Once a upon a time, not long ago, there was a board meeting at Geni Headquarters.
They discussed the horrible fact that for an extended period of time "President of Geni-World" = Toomas Hendrik Ilves from a tiny country in Northern Europe, Barack H. Obama is a close second, but for heavens sake, this needs to be changed.
First, this is due to the snowball effect of {user} is related to {top-100-profile} notifications in Recent Activity. There's a brilliant way to stop most Estonians being listed in http://www.geni.com/popular - make it for MPs only and the visits and top ranks will be reduced.
Second, create a distraction, instead of (local and therefore insignificant) celebrity relatives, show {user} is now following {targets} to compensate for the loss of graphical elements from news feed.
Third, rename the list of 'popular' profiles to 'notable/popular' and make it static based on what Geni staff consider interesting. OK, maybe not totally static, but stop it being a dynamic list reflecting the number of visits to a profile. Take away time slice of 7 days to show profiles with most recent visitors that gave an equal chance to any newly popular profile. Now only a random and time consuming permission of a curator grants the right to be notable.
Here you go, no more annoying E-stonans in top 1-25. Some may have been converted to MPs and appear occasionally in the new popular 500, but it's not as bad as it was on 29 September 2010 when:
All time popular 1-25 (8, 32%):
Toomas Hendrik Ilves
Ivo Linna
Mart Laar
Lydia Koidula
Ülle Lichtfeldt
Georg Ots
Evelin Ilves
Konstantin Päts
26-50 (3, 12%):
Private User
A. H. Tammsaare
Elmo Nüganen
51-75 (5, 20%):
Uku Suviste
Betti Alver
Reet Linna
Anne Reemann
Taavi Peetre
76-99 (5, 20%):
Oskar Luts
Arnold Rüütel
Jaan Tõnisson
Tarmo Pihlap
Siim Kallas
A total of 21 out of 99 (for some reason it's called top 100 but only showing 99).
Country with 0.02% out of total world population had achieved 1 in 3 among top 25 and 1 in 5 among top 100 in Geni?
Finally the invasion is over !
It's about feedback to the changes of http://www.geni.com/popular.
For some reason the enhancement wasn't mentioned in http://blog.geni.com/.
No NP (normal profile) can make it to the list any more and users are unable to see what profile is genuinely the most visited. Recent (last 7 days) and all time lists are gone as well as the option to see popularity of blood relatives and family members. The new list seems to have some dynamic element to it but also some criteria about who is considered more notable than others. I doubt that Geni will ever publish the number of viewers.
Shmuel, Jesus used to be #1 in all time popular.
Noah, fair enough. The list seemed quite static at first.
Wouldn't it make curators' life a bit easier if some, for example 401-500, were for all profiles, not only MPs, so that new profiles would have a chance?

The idea behind the change is that master profiles are curated profiles and the best copy of a profile for each person. With the old list, you would have two to three, or more, profiles for the same person in the list. Many of the profiles didn't have profile photos, about me sections, or other interesting data.
We're using the popular list to show off the great job curators and other users are doing with master profiles.
