This discussion will be a convenient place to store references to profiles or research materials about witchcraft in Colonial America. There are several Witchcraft projects started but not everyone wants to work on a project or on a witchcraft project. Those who do can participate in this discussion and find information useful for their projects.

As you work on profiles, if you see a reference to witchcraft, please post a link to that profile here. If you are reasearching witchcraft and find a resource you wish to share, please post that information and a link, if possible, here.

Nathaniel Whittier

Nathaniel Whitcher/Whittier, son of Thomas Whittier (or Whitcher), was born in Haverhill, August 14, 1658, and settled in Salisbury. He took the oath of allegiance at Haverhill in 1677, and was admitted a freeman in 1690. His first wife Mary was a witness in the Susanna Martin trial on the charge of witchcraft in 1692. Goodwife Martin was executed July 19. 1692. But she was doing her duty as she and others saw it. Both she and her husband signed the petition in favor of Mary Bradbury, who was convicted of witchcraft the same

I did not attach the wife's profile. There are two wives listed on the profile, both named Mary and I don't know which one was first.

Mary Whittier
The correct Mary, wife of Nathaniel Whittier. Her profile picture is a picture of the tombstone of the witch she helped to convict.

Susannah (North) Martin, Salem Witch Trials

Susannah (North) Martin (baptized September 30, 1621 – July 19, 1692) was a woman executed for witchcraft during the Salem witch trials.

FYI -- Nathaniel Whittier's second wife was Mary Brackett Ring, widow of Joseph Ring of Salisbury. Although this Mary had no special role in the witchcraft trials, her first husband, Joseph Ring (whom she married after 1692), did. He, along with his brother Jarvis, were witnesses against Susanna Martin. In other words, both Nathaniel Whitter and his second wife, Mary Brackett Ring, had prior spouses who testified against Susanna Martin.
