Geni could save users thousands of hours of work if it had a "global search and replace" that ONLY Geni could use that would change names in all capitals to lower case. Yes, I know it might cause a little problem with names like McDonald but they could probably work that out with the right program.

I am just as opposed to names that are in all lower case as I am to all caps. Lazy typing by users is what causes either one.

The rules for properly capitalizing proper names are fairly well defined. So I'd like to see Geni implement something that would do it correctly.

e.e.cummings was the last person I know of that used all lower case in his name. ...I know of noone else

I am grateful that Geni allows me to spell my name with an exclamation mark, which is how I've been doing it for years. The DMV does not extend the same courtesy.

Some of these captilazation "errors" may be intentional on the part of managers for whatever reason. If you see something needing a change, why not contact the profile manager and ask?

OMG! Just saw that you (David Kaleita) added a few profiles just days ago that have their surnames in ALL CAPS. Are you guilty of that which you decry?

12/24/2010 at 9:31 AM

Nope. If Geni reported such a thing, then it must have been some sort of temporary placeholder I created for the purpose of completing a merge correction. If you find any like from me that that are in existance for more than ten minutes please let me know, as it definitely would have been an error on my part.

We're talking about PERMANENT entries in the tree that were entered ON PURPOSE here, not accidents or temporary entries.

Lets not get catty. David, like some many others, INHERIT files that may have lower case OR upper case letters for names....

I, for one, getting back to the point....would LOVE not to feel the necessity of putting birth years into the 1st name position....hopefully an enhancement will be instituted that better addresses the WHOLE of a person (name, known as (if different than 1st), last GIVEN name, maiden name and date (s) to identify. AND take into account such intros as 'del'; 'ap'; 'd''; 'von'....etc (as in many European names).

It is the duplication of names that, at least I think, is the most confounding....and why SO many people use so many exotic ways of keeping them clear in the order of things (me included).

I find that the persistant 'ghost' profiles are much more of a problem, at least in the trees I have...I keep encountering them all over the place...

Geni programmers have a BIG job trying to enhance the system....and I, for one, would like to see a LARGER profile per person so that I don't have to go into the full profile to see WHAT is there...I NEED to know the maiden name as well as relationship (and find very many files where people just forget to go into the relationship area to designate the order of spouses...leaving EVERY spouse looking like they were the 1st...instead of giving a sequence when there were 2nd, 3rd and even 4th).....which wouldn't fit on what is now available for name.

ANYWAY, I find maiden's in the middle, the end, or not mentioned at all...which confuses the heck out of me...since then I have NO link to the matriarchal side of the tree, or it's so confusing that I can't figure out which of the parents has a chance of being right...

And now, with a family split up so that one person has 1 manager and each of the other children having a different manager....

In parting...lets just all say we'd like a change that makes sense...and that the present system has it's flaws...if the programmers program a system that makes sense to the 'users' then we can all sleep peacefully and not fret over what NEW catastropy we'll find in the morning...like now

Fay,

I've had a sneak peak at a re-designed "main" profile page that's in the works, and I think it meets quite a few of your points. So stay tuned .... :)

Erica Howton when will we see these changes? Are there "Beta-Testers"?
Why you can't post some screen-shots of such changes beforehand to forum or blog? Maybe it will be good to have pro & contra comments for these...

I don't have any more info than what I've mentioned. I don't think this will affect language or case issues though.

The enhancement just released and with full screen shots on the Geni Blog is for revisions on the "about me" field. I haven't even looked into that one yet. :)

I prefer surnames in lower case here on Geni, but in my genealogy pages I do capitalize the surnames. Thanks Fay duplicates are my worst problem, ghosts are too. People go to our website and add names that are already there. As Pro I have to keep busy merging folks. I would love added details and not people already there. I think caps help to identify placeholders, I can see that. Also temporary pictures can serve the purpose..

ALL CAPS are a display issue. Go to your preferences: you can set your display on various name fields to show caps.

But data entry in the Geni database should follow the rules of grammar; i.e., names in mixed case.

I do like images for disambiguation a lot, and they also illuminate and illustrate our ancestors.

Are you familiar with the Master Profile program? You can read more about it here:

Last I knew names were nouns....

A noun is the name of a person, place or thing and, as such, the first letter of the word is capitalized (the rest are not). The first letter in any sentence is also capitalized whether it is a proper noun or not..

As I have no intention of changing the rules of English compostion and those rules would appear as well in other languages...the argument for all CAPS or all lower case in GENi seems to be rather presumptive...
and it creates corrective work for those that have edit power that should not be necessary...and is a waste of time.....

Type it right...and if you want to see it in all CAPS then (as Erica said) go to preferences and display it to show all caps....or get glasses!

One final salvo: Any profile that has NO dates in parents, spouse, siblings, or children SHOULD be ignored by Geni in determining tree matches....(no matter if names match).....if not 1 person's date of birth or death is in the ENTIRE family that is profiled for each person...then shame on the person who entered them....let them wait to link with others till then have done their due diligence.

David it's not lazy typing. That's rude of you. Maybe a person is tired or hit the cap button in error or like dyslexic and don't even realize I've done it. Eventually I will find it and fix it. but I do agree with Fay That capital for the first letter the rest small.

3/21/2011 at 6:45 AM

Point in defense of David...you can merge a file that has all CAPS...and then it is in your profile....not from your doing...but because of the merge....

I have been trying to clean up data conflicts in my collaborators lists...there are now only 18,000...and that's just MY collaborators....and it does not matter who's profile they end up in...they need to be corrected...and that takes time .....a LOT of time....

So don't go getting testy at David....or anyone else that just happens to be lead manager of a profile....some profiles have 60+ managers....

Just make sure you (this is directed at anyone who uses all CAPS or all lower case) are not part of the problem.....and if you are...fix it yourself....and if you inherited it in a tree match...then fix it even tho you didn't put it there in the 1st place....

What people get feisty about is people who just perpetually lock on or off caps-lock and enter data with no consideration that they are NOT the ones who have to clean it up....
