Private User and I spent time fixing up the Captain John Johnson family profiles. Private User is I believe the curator of Captain John Johnson.
Some random person came into a couple of days ago and changed the Master Profile so it now is disconnected from its ancestors and is named "No Name":
Frankly, this is what I have been afraid of and I want to know what Geni is going to do about this. What's the point of creating Master Profiles, having curators, and creating projects and putting in a whole lot of work if some random person can undo all the work so you have to do it over and over.
HELP. What can be done about this tactically and in the long term?
Oh yes Captain John Johnson is the master profile of Captain John Johnson of Roxbury, the founder of the family in America and the anchor of my Captain John Johnson of Roxbury project. Now a disconnected profile with no name.
"Reversion" on text fields is to be implemented next week. I hope you're writing directly to the person who changed the data erroneously? Meanwhile, I am taking over curatorship temporarily (until Tammy Swingle is available, as she knows the family).
Once you've corrected the fields as you know it, let *me* know, and I will lock the Master Profile to further changes. This also means that merging will slow down, as curators have to do it personally, but it's the best way to prevent changes. And anyway, merge requests will show in the Project Merge Center (Geni was clever that way).
Sorry this happened. I know you and Tammy put a lot of work into this profile and family. We'll get it fixed.
Everyone reading along: please be careful and don't do this sort of thing. It affects too many others.
If you go to tree view and click on the clock icon in the bottom right (of any profile), you can see the revision history. Here is what it says for this profile for the last 8 revisions:
Dec 25, 2010 9:42 AM Erica Isabel Howton updated John Johnson's profile. display name, first name and last name
Dec 21, 2010 5:33 PM Randall Bruce Robinson updated John Johnson's profile. display name, first name, gender and 3 others
Dec 19, 2010 6:34 AM Brendan Molloy merged Elizabeth Porter into Elizabeth [Porter] Johnson.
Dec 19, 2010 6:34 AM Brendan Molloy merged Isaac Johnson into Captain Isaac Johnson.
Dec 16, 2010 8:01 AM Steven Gary Smith disconnected Elizabeth [Porter] Johnson from her husband John JOHNSON.
Dec 16, 2010 8:01 AM Steven Gary Smith disconnected Elizabeth [Porter] Johnson from her husband JOHNSTON.
Dec 16, 2010 7:43 AM Steven Gary Smith updated Captain Isaac Johnson's profile. suffix
Dec 16, 2010 7:31 AM Steven Gary Smith disconnected Elizabeth [Porter] Johnson from her parents Elizabeth Allott and Adrian Porter and siblings Joan Porter, Robert Porter, Edward Porter and Mary Porter and 1 other.
So you may want to talk to Steven Gary Smith as well.
Unfortunately it is the problem that Geni has to solve or we'll all make our trees private and leave. People don't understand how to use this sophisticated program and come in and willy nilly make big messes and it can happen over and over.
All of the correct information is in the project and in the About Me field. I don't personally have the heart to fix it and I don't even know where all his parents and spouses who were disconnected from him are.
@Tammy - maybe you can fix this for the family, please??? I have the flu and am pretty pissed and sick.
Everyone with an interest ... make sure you "follow" the Captain. It's easier to see news in "real time" and be able to interpret it correctly. The revision log doesn't cover all the fields correctly.
Now that the profile has been re-attahced, I'm locking it down to changes. Notify thru discussions in The Captain Johnson project if her is a merge or change needed and a curator will take care of it there.
That way only people with an investment in their ancestor will have access.
If someone just made a mistake, come on forward and be forgiven. It creates a better atmosphere.
Hi all - I just read this thread as I've been eating turkey and stuffing today. At any rate I'm back to the computer. I am familiar with this Capt. Johnson line but only mildly, as he ties into my ancestral Bassett line as an in-law relationship as follows.
http://www.geni.com/path/Steven+Smith+is+related+to+Capt+John+Johns...
I do recall disconnecting a relationship - but I did not do anything haphazardly to this line - or anything that I would brand as "random destruction." When I was working to merge out lines that were going back to Sarah Bassett, I tried to clean that branch a bit too. And there were some screwy things that were going on - I recall the "No Name" as well as some multiple sets of parents (who were not the same people).
Should I have made an error, I submit to you my most sincere apology. As I do not consider myself an exert on this Johnson line, I will make no changes to the line any closer than Sarah Bassett (Burt), who is my 11 great grandmother, and whose brother married Capt. John Johnson's daughter.

Hi. I just want to set the record straight on the relationship I disconnected above. I removed the connection of Captain John Johnson being married to Elizabeth Porter. Elizabeth Porter married Isaac Johnson, Captain John Johnson's son. I'm hoping that she was not also Isaac's mother.
Not only is it uncommon for a son to marry his mother, Elizabeth Porter was born 23 Dec 1617, and Captain John Johnson was born in c. 1590. Stranger things could happen, but even in the 17th century, it was uncommon for a man to marry a woman who was 30 years younger than him.
I realize this isn't a proven source document, but I do refer to the Celestial Family Organizations pedigree charts in regard to these families, and they too agree that Elizabeth Porter was not a wife of Captain John Johnon. http://www.celestialfamily.org/Genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I68...
I'd also like to comment on the second revision I made that is listed in this discussion, which is disconnecting Elizabeth Porter from her parents Elizabeth Allott and Adrian Porter. Someone may have conflicting data, but from what I have found, Elizabeth Porter's parents were Edward Porter and Elizabeth Rhoda. and I do not know of documented siblings for Elizabeth Porter. Did someone have better, or more comprehensive information about this?

If there was an orphaned profile that resulted from these relationships being deleted by me, I am sorry that happened. But I also wouldn't necessarily call it my fault that in a spaghetti string of bad connections a partially merged profile I couldn't see ended up orphaned.
The last edit I would like to speak to that is documented above for me is updating a suffix for Isaac Johnson. There were multiple profiles for him, and I believe this was done on a data conflict resolution screen One profile manager had given him "Captain" in the suffix field, while others had nothing. I selected "Captain". Perhaps suffix isn't where we should put that - I really don't know. I felt it was an appropriate description and I selected to leave it there, as Isaac was in fact a Captain as well.
Sorry to go point by point, but I found myself apologizing for theoretical errors that I could have made and I take my work on Geni seriously enough that I do not want to apologize myself into leaving an impression of admitting to being reckless.

Tammy and I did a lot of work and Elizabeth Porter was not - never was - one of the elder Captain John Johnson's wives. As I said, he had three -- Mary Heath who died just before he emigrated. Margery (possibly Scudder) who came to America with him, and Grace Negus who was a widow, who was his last wife. I don't remember offhand whether he had children with Margery (Margaret shows up as her name in some sources), but I think not.
I had never seen Elizabeth Porter so if she was showing up as a wife of the same John Johnson, it was due to changes after Tammy and I made the first pass fixing up the early generations of the family.
I have the recently published The Biography and Genealogy of Captain John Johnson from Roxbury, Massachusetts written by Gerald Garth Johnson in 2000, based on earlier family genealogies and histories.
