It shows parents as Augustine Williams and Hannah Norton. It also shows Hannah married to John Pratt and John Rose.

The one world tree also has an entry to Hannah Williams with parents Thomas Williams and Rebecca Waterhouse - 34 entries.

It shows this Hannah as being married to Israel Wilcox.

Based on this.. I'm going to remove Thomas and Rebecca as the parents of this Hannah. I'll create a new Hannah profile under them and add the husband of Israel Wilcox.

Now I'm not sure... looking at the marriage dates.. things don't add up with the birth of the children. Children born to Pratt, when she was married to Rose, and the reverse. '''So, I don't know... guess I'm back to the original request. I'm going to leave it conflicted for the moment.'''

Hi Jeff, I am not related to this Williams family (I don't think) but I am looking into it. Erica Howton usually has the best advice as to where to go for reliable primary sources. I find that the Internet family trees have copied one from the other and in cases like this, I am reluctant to believe them, unless I find one who seems to have really gone to primary sources consistently.

I often leave things as conflicted where I can't find good sources and I might be doing something that undoes something a family member who knew more did. I have made a few mistakes being overly zealous :)

Erica Howton can you point Jeff to some good sources for early Connecticut families?

Hey Jeff, there seem to be two Hannah Williams because it shows her married to two men and I suspect that it's not two husbands, it's two Hannahs merged incorrectly. Hence two sets of parents.

That Hannah Williams is the daughter of Augustine Williams and Hannah Norton. The daughter, Hannah, married John Rose. I believe in Killingworth, CT.

The other Hannah Williams married John Pratt on 10 Nov 1695 in Saybrook, CT

Sprained wrist here so excuse slowness & generalizations.

I don't know the families well but name confusions are of course rampant.

1. Google up articles on "researching early New England families."

2. Assume there already is a Geni profile for all Colonials. Try to work backwards in time, current to now, to fill in gaps. My CT / ME Hill family needed data entry until they married Wilcoxons. :)))

3. Learn some geography and start with the small proud old towns, who have at the very least a bit of an internet presence. Wethersfield CT is one. http://wethersfieldct.com/visitor-information Can't find Killingworth CT but the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killingworth,_Connecticut is of course worth a read.

4. Use the Projects tool to help others as you go along and links that cite good on line BOOK sources as you go along. I started this Project for that reason: http://www.geni.com/projects/Original-Planters-New-Haven-CT-1643

5. Good book sources ... we need a list in Geni. Do you know http://Hathitrust.org? http://worldcat.org? I even read http://Amazon.com reviews to gain a sense of what's authoritative through a google books hit.

6. Hint: the Pratt family should be well documented. Caveats: Good Family Association sites -- http://www.edmund-rice.org/ is a great example -- do best with their own surname lines ... so with a marriage event, you need to reconcile records researched / compiled for BOTH (or more) families.

7. Upload documents as you go along. Cite books in the profile as you go along.

8. My wish: Download cool individual images as you learn, too. The least we can do for a "key" ancestor is give them a unique visual identity if possible.

My quick trick is finding the guy who "looks important" and googling his name and birth date.

This is a compilation of data from my master file. I have suppressed all sources to protect private contributions, however, my primary sources are the census & other public documents (including published extracts of vital statistics), NEHGS. the IGI, Ancestry & USGenWeb, as well as Burke's Peerage & Landed Gentry, &c.

You always want to go to the ORIGINAL secondary source with your cited data. In this day & age, "oh, you know, the IGI ... "

Yay, good team effort. Good work Jeff. An illustrative example of what we have to correct. Are these curated profiles? If not, I can curate them and put curator notes on them.

I posted about this yesterday, but I don't know that anyone saw. Google has an eBookstore (http://books.google.com/ebooks) that offers thousands of free ebooks on a little bit of everything. I'm muddling my way through my Bolling line and found over 400 free books and magazines that reference Bollings, via genealogy, church/family record books, or county/state history. I'm very excited about this! You may find something on your Hannah Williams there. Happy hunting!

Hatte, I'm surprised I didn't know about it. Why doesn't everyone know?? It's been a great resource, and probably more reliable than the too copied over internet family trees I keep coming across.

Linda - I now go straight to Google books because otherwise it's just page after page of family trees that are copied over and over and it's too much to wade through to find the one or two family trees that used primary sources. Erica Howton has knowledge of a lot of good sources for the Colonial era also.

Linda, I did find some info on John Pratt and Hannah Williams in the Google ebooks. I've added it as a source for John's birth date.

Jeff, I'll curate them for you and make a note so the two Hannahs hopefully do NOT get merged again. I assume that you have separated them already?

I have a subscription to NEGHS and may take a look there as well, when I have time. Although I saw older NEGHS publications in Google ebooks. Also, sometimes one finds good material in the online genealogy forums because this issue has come up before.

Okay done. Both profiles are both Master Profiles so cannot be merged unless one is unmastered, which only a curator can do. I'll also follow the profiles, just in case. Hopefully there will not be a need to lock them. I put all CAPS warnings on them to be careful.

I "tagged" the uploaded document http://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000011421051352 with the profile names Augustine Williams and Hannah Rose.

That way a good source is available on several profiles.

Excellent Erica. Hey I just noticed that The Lathrop / Fuller tree is funky again from a merge. Jane Lathrop and Samuel Fuller's child has a double set of parents (Matthew Fuller and his wife), even though your curator note is explicit.
