hi folks,
i have become aware of some interesting theory indicating that Edward Coffin was actually NOT the son John and Mary Coffin, as has been widely accepted for arguably at least a century or so.
A fellow named Stuart Hereld, who appears to be fairly thorough, at least, in his due diligence on face value, has theorized a different parentage altogether.
this theory would indeed upset some folks, as it leads to a completely alternate path of immigration and bypasses the Tristram Coffyn, Sr progeny altogether.

There is another branch reflecting this theory here, on Geni.com, but only goes as far as Edward's parents, Isaac and Anna (Churchill) Coffing.
John as father
Edward Coffin
Isaac as father
Unknown Profile
i'd like to invite input, research and dialog about this issue, although admittedly i for one can admit the potential outcome could be rather disappointing, no doubt,

Question(s):
[A] Furthest Left
I have, in my tree, an Edward Coffin avatar which has a green "rule" around a generic grey photo icon. when i onMouseOver, it says "Edward is your fourth great grandfather."
(Green cloud +55) ?
incidentally, "the" wife, Sybil Coffin has a green rule around her generic photo icon as well. i am guessing since they are both green, this indicates some sort of "preferred" relation between the two?
additionally, the wire-frame lines that attach avatars between this Edward Coffin and Syibil Coffin are dark grey, while the center Edward has a light grey line attaching them at "vertical center" of avatars.then directly down to common horizontal line (geez, bear with me) connecting that generation's gene pool :)
sound pretty? it's not. :/
this path takes me to the Isaac and Anne Coffin dead end link as outlined above.
[B] Master Profile (one to the right of above avatar)
adjacent (to the right and between the Edward and Sybil light green rule versions) is another Edward Coffin avatar, instead of green rule around this generic grey photo icon, there is a blue one. when i onMouseOver, it says "Edward is your fourth great grandmother's husband"
(Green cloud +70) ?
this Edward is attached, as explained above, using light grey lines attached at "vertical center" of avatars and connected down to generation gene pool common horiz line.
ok, so now.. put your right foot in, shake it... (just checking to see if your still with me)
1) what are the green and blue "rules" around each generic photo icon differentiating?
2) why are there dark grey and light grey lines connecting avatars? what are the different meanings?
OK - i think i am seeing what is essentially a composited version of two trees in their "intersected" state. is this correct? the Edward Coffin with the blue rule around the photo icon, MP, belongs to one tree as an axis, so to speak. the other Edward Coffin with the green rule is the axis for another version of the tree, but is attached to Sybil Coffin in what appears to be "favored," hierarchically - especially confusing given this Edward is NOT an MP.
hmm.. so the blue and green indicate intersecting tree branches?
head hurts now
well, now that i've figured out that i don't know how to leverage what i've learned, can anyone help me?
thank you for induling me and thanks for your help in advance === please :)

Tristam,
I am very bad at explaining / interpreting visuals, I am sorry. Plus I have a sprained wrist. :)
Are you adding Coffin profiles to the Starbuck / Coffin Project? I work much better on a Project basis. :)

Tris, at least I can tell you that the green framing is the regular framing for public profiles, and the purple (perhaps looks blue on your screen!) is the framing for those designated as Master Profiles. The connecting lines are merely different marriage lines (if horizontal) and they vary in color just to distinguish one marriage from another. These don't necessarily have to be real marriages--but often after merging, a man, for example, may end up with 8 wives, and so will have 8 different colored lines going to all 8 nodes/avatars. Once those so-called wives are correctly merged, or removed as necessary, then your tree should end up with the correct number of lines, nodes and persons.
Does that help?
Binyamin, this thread is in response to Tristram's request about one of his ancestors (as part of this discussion: http://www.geni.com/discussions/90190, and so it is probably not of interest to you unless you are related to the early American Coffin family.
I believe that because you follow me you must get news feed of anything I post, but it is not understandable because it is part of a larger conversation on the Public DIscussion board that you are not following.
