In 1898 Abdul and wife Belle went to Wallowa, Oregon with their daughter Leach and two children. Charles Haney, husband of Leach had gone ahead and they were going to join him there. They went to La Grande, Oregon by train and then on to Wallowa by wagon. They bought property which indicated they must have considered staying in that area. The climate was much different than what they were used to, so that may have had a bearing on the fact that they did not stay to long. I am assuming that when school was out in the spring of 1900 they returned to West Virginia. As they are recorded on the 1900 census taken in June as being in West Virginia. In "Oliver Scotts Diary" he does tell in May of the McClures being back and then later he says that Burke McClure and Tom Haney had just returned from Oregon.
PIONEER CITIZEN PASSES TO REWARD
Word was received yesterday by relatives in the city of the death of A. L. McClure, of Grandview, who had attained the ripe old age of 86 years. Death occurred at eleven o'clock yesterday morning following only a brief illness.
Mr. McClure was one of the early pioneers of this section, coming to Grandview when but a young man and passing the remainder of his days in that community. When the call came for volunteers in the war of 1862-1865 he enlisted serving as orderly-sergeant in No. A. Company C, 36th Virginia Regiment, Breckenridge Command, Jube Early's Division. During his time of service he was engaged in several skirmishes around Beckley, known then as Raleigh Court House. As a mark of his service he received only a slight wound in the knee.
He was married to Miss Belle Carper, sister of the late Andrew Jackson Carper, of Grandview, and of the children born to that union there remain John, Wade, Burke and Robert, all of Grandview, Mrs. Charles Haney, of Oregon; Mrs. Charles Scott, of Table Rock; Mrs. Sallie Rhiner [Riner] of Grandview and Deck McClure, of Beckley.
Mr. McClure was one of the staunch, loyal members of the Christian church at Grandview and words are inadequate to express the high esteem in which he was held by friends and neighbors. His going was the last of an old pioneer family, well known, respected and highly honored. Services will be conducted this afternoon at the Grandview church by Rev. Wm. Riss Lloyd, pastor of the Beckley Christian Church, and burial will be made in the Grandview burial plot.
