About Abigail Curtis
Abigail was living in 1673 but dead before April 1680. Her parents are unknown.
Abigail married Thomas Curtis as his second wife; his first was named Elizabeth. He was baptized in Ash-juxta-Sandwich, Kent, on 2 Nov 1619 and died between 1680 and 1706 (likely in the 1692 Raid on York). He was the son of Richardine, who first married Thomas Curtis, second Thomas Chambers. Thomas Chambers emigrated to Massachusetts with his wife and step children (children of Thomas and Richardene Curtis) by 1638; he bought land in York, Maine, but his residence was in Scituate, Massachusetts. Richardene, widow of Thomas Chambers, made her will on 18 November 1672 (probated June 1673); bequest to Abigail, wife of her son Thomas Curtice, and to Elizabeth his daughter.
It is possible some of the known children of Thomas Curtis were by his wife Abigail.
Children of Thomas Curtis:
- Benjamin Curtis (-10 Aug 1703)
- Hannah Curtis
- Abigail Curtis (5 Dec 1647-)
- Elizabeth Curtis (Died young) (ca 1649-between 1671 and 1680)
- Joseph Curtis (ca 1653-ca 1706)
- Samuel Curtis (1659-)
- Lydia Curtis
- Job Curtis (ca 1664-)
- Dodovah Curtis (ca 1668-)
- Sarah Curtis
- Rebecca Curtis
- Anne Curtis (ca 1671-1720)
notes
From Deaneâs History of Scituate:49
Thomas Curtis, (brother of Richard), was in Scituate 1649. He had previously lived at Georgiana, and is called of York, in our records. He returned to York, where he was living in 1684, at which date he gave a deed to his son Samuel, of lands on Curtis or Buttonwood hill, where Samuel and several generations of his family lived. Â Two children of Thomas Curtis were born and baptized in Scituate second parish, Elizabeth 1649, and Samuel 1659. He had also a son Benjamin of Portsmouth. We have seen a deed (preserved here) from Robert Tufton Mason to Benjamin Curtis, conveying a lot of land âon Great Island in the Piscataqua River,â dated 1681.
Thomasâs will was dated 19 Apr 1680, but not probated until 1 Oct 1706. It mentions his sons Joseph, Dodivah and Job; daughters Abigail, Lydia, Sarah, Rebecca and Anne Curtis, and Hannah Jynkins. He had already given portions to sons Benjamin and Samuel.

âFrom Richardeneâs will it is known that she left a bequest to Abigail, her son Thomasâ wife and to Elizabeth, HIS daughter. That shows Elizabeth was the daughter of the first wife, Elizabeth. She was probably the first grandchild and therefore special. . . I am sure all of the children from Abigail on are Abigailâs children. The only one which can be questioned is Joseph. As he named a daughter, Elizabeth, and not Abigail I would go along that he was a son of Elizabeth. I guess we will never know the maiden names of Richardene, Elizabeth and Abigail.â1529
