About Abigail Eaton
Abigail (Bachelor) Eaton migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Abigail Batchelder (Bachelor in the Great Migration Begins) was born about 1600. She died after 1658. She married Dammant. After his death, she married John Eaton. Born: About 1600 in England. Age 35 on her Certificate of Conformity to travel on the Elizabeth and Ann in April 1635. [1]
Her first marriage record calls her 'of Faversham.' co. Kent, England and her first child was also born there. It is likely she was born at or very near to Faversham. Her parents have not been identified.
Common Errors to Avoid
- Despite intensive research, Abigail is not known to be the daughter of Mark (Bachelder) Batchelder and Mary Fantinge.
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bachelor-22#Common_Errors_to_Avoid
- Incorrect LNAB: It is sometimes claimed that the wife of John Eaton was named Abigail Gilson. This is an error caused by the confusion between John Damon (d. 1708) of Reading who was the oldest son of our Abigail Bachelor, and a different John Damon (d. 1676) of Scituate who was heir to his uncle, William Gilson. Parish records from Faversham and St. Mary’s make it clear that she is Abigail Bachelor.
- Anderson error: Robert Charles Anderson in his Great Migration series expressed doubt that Abigail was a sister of John Bachelor of Watertown stating “no evidence has been found to support this claim.”[7] He also stated that “the maiden name of John Eaton’s wife remains unknown.” On 30 July 1641, “bretheren John Batchellour & John Eaton wth ther wives” were admitted to the church at Dedham, but Anderson felt it was incorrect to therefore assume that Abigail was John Bachelor’s sister. However, he was unaware of the parish records at Faversham and Dover which absolutely prove her maiden name as Abigail Bachelor. It is therefore certain that Abigail’s maiden was in fact Bachelor, and that John Bachelor was almost certainly her brother.+
- Incorrect father: She is sometimes made to be a daughter of Mark Bachelor and so a sister of a another Great Migration immigrant, Henry Bachelor. This is incorrect. It is caused by a confusion with an entirely different Henry Bachelor who settled in Dedham, Massachusetts and might be a brother of Abigail. Her parents are unidentified.

Abigail Batchelor married first Henry Damon by license dated 6 March 1619/20 to be married at Faversham.[2] [3] Their first child, John Damon, was baptized 13 January 1620/21 at Faversham.[2] [4] The family then apparently moved to Dover where Jane Damon daughter of Henry Damon was baptized on 15 August 1624 at St. James, Dover. Henry Damon must have died between 1624 (when Jane was born) and 1630 (when she remarried), though no burial record or will has been found for him. She married second John Eaton at the parish of St. James in Dover, co. Kent, England. [2] The parish registers read “John Eton & Abigaile Doman”.
Henry Damon died leaving two young children, likely as a young man himself. Parish records at Faversham, St. James in Dover, and St. Mary's in Dover have been used to conclusively prove his origins and that of his children. [2] His marriage and birth of his first child occured at Faversham; however, he soon thereafter removed to Dover where the baptism of his second child is found. After his widow Abigail remarried to John Eaton, his children emigrated with his wife on the Elizabeth and Ann in May of 1685.

Abigail Damon Eaton Birth: 1600 Kent, England Death: unknown Dedham Norfolk County Massachusetts, USA John Eaton married Abigail (____) Damon at St. James, Dover, Kent, 5 Apr 1630. They had six children: Mary Mason, John, Thomas, John again, Abigail Mason, & Jacob. Through his marriage to the widow Abigail Damon, John Eaton became stepfather to her two children, JANE DAMON {1635, Watertown} & John Damon, who appeared in Reading in the mid-1640s. Abigail traveled to New England with her mother & stepfather, but John was not on the passenger list with them, & he may well have come later. Some secondary sources claim that John Eaton's wife Abigail was sister of JOHN BACHELOR {1634, Watertown}. No evidence has been found to support this claim, but a record does exist which may explain why some researchers have been led to this conclusion. On 30 Jul 1641, "brethern John Batchellour & John Eaton with their wives" were admitted to Dedham church. This record describes Bachelor & Eaton as brethern in the church, but may have been taken innacurately by some researchers to indicate that they were brothers-in-law, assuming that Eaton had married Bachelor's sister. The maiden surname of John Eaton's wife remains unknown.
