For the past few days I have been checking original source citations for Myrtle Steven Hyde's report on the origin of the wife of Richard Montague of Hadley, Mass. "A Study of the Downing Family in England, With Connections in Early New England" by Myrtle S. Hyde , The American Genealogist, 1999 vol 74, No 3, pgs 161-174 & Vol 74, No 4, pgs 299-308. Myrtle has done a very intensive study of the Downing family, not to just identify the ancestry o f Richard Montague's wife Abigail, but to also set to rest the line of descent for the immigr ant Downings of Boston Mass. as well. Ms. Hyde's research shows that ABIGAIL DOWNING/MONTAGU E was the daughter of Rev. JOSEPH DOWNING, a rector of Layer Marney, Essex, England, and his wife JANE ROSE. Joseph Downing is the youngest brother of Emanuel Downing, the immigrant ancestor of the American Downing Family, and the father of Sir George Downing Brt. ABIGAIL DOWNING was baptized on 5 Oct. 1617, at the parish church of St. Lawrence, Ipswich, England. This information collaborates with the letter written by Emanuel Downing to his brother-in-la w John Winthrop, in which he names Abigail Montague as his cousin (niece). This letter is cited in the often quoted Montague Family History by George W. Montague & William L. Montague "The History and Genealogy of the Montague Family of America..." 1886, Albany, N.Y. This appar ently proves a new set of relatives for the American Montague Family. One other genealogica l mystery which Ms Hyde's research has finally solved, is any connection to the Wingfield family for the Downing ancestry. The line of descent from Abigail Downing/Montague to the Norfolk Downing/Wingfields has been disproved. As Abigail's Downing ancestors are contempory with the Norfolk Downing and Wingfield families. As with all genealogical research, this and all information should be checked with the original sources. I have done so, and found Ms. Hyde' s research to be of the best quality.
