NOTE: John Collins and Abigail Rose had two daughters, both named Abigail. One Abigail married Samuel Thompson and died in America 1643. The other married Samuel Bedle.

"Rev. William Tompson...he remained at Braintree until his death, Dec. 10, 1666, with the exception of the year 1642-3, which he passed as a Missionary in Virginia. Suffolk; probably m. (2) Rev. William Thompson, curate of the church at Winwick in Lancashire, who emigrated with his wife Abigail and family to New England about 1637 and settled finally at Braintree, Mass. Daniel Collins in his will mentioned Samuel Thompson, son of his (the testator's) sister Tomson. Abigail, first wife of Rev. William Thompson of Braintree, Mass., d. in New England 1 Jan. 1642/3, and he m. (2) Ann, widow of Simon Crosby of Cambridge, Mass. (For Rev. William Thompson and his family see Savage's Genealogical Dictionary, vol. 4, p. 289, Pope's Pioneers of Massachusetts, p. 457, and other New England works.)

"In January, 1935, the New England Historical and Genealogical Registerpublished my article giving some records obtained from England relating to the origin of Edward Collins of Cambridge, Massachusetts... (vol. 89, pp. 73-79, 148-151)...

"The revision of the pedigree, given below, is based on the fact that Daniel Collins (bapt. 1583), in his own brief pedigree, stated that his mother, Abigail Rose, was the thirdwife of his father...There is one other consideration which makes the revised arrangement of the family group more probable. The will of Daniel Collins mentions that his mother was buried at Braintree, Essex. Daniel's brother, Samuel, was Vicar of Braintree and the m9other, if third wife and widow of the elder John, presumably died at the home of her son Samuel. That would not be true if the mother was the first wife of John, Jr., since she would have died when Daniel and Samuel were quite young.

"John Collins, evidently the man of this name who was buried at Bramford, Suffolk, England, 14 Sept. 1594, had in earlier life been a salter, of London, according to the brief pedigree registered by his son Daniel. He was three times married, his third wife being Abigail Rose, daughter of Thomas Rose of Exmouth, Devon...

"Children by first or second marriages (incomplete record): i. John, b. (say at a guess, 1564); m. (1) at Bramford, 29 Nov. 1590, Grace Wagger; m. (2) at Bramford, 29 May 1599, Maulden Treitherne, who was baptized at Bramford, 28 Apr. 1577, parents not stated. She may have m. (2) at Bramford, 6 aug. 1614, William Cozzins (or Cousens), unless the marriage pertains to her adoloscent daughter. Child by first wife: 1. Abigail, bapt. 17 Oct. 1591."

Sprague and Anne L. Jones. As a young man, Sprague attended Thayer Academy and received his A.B. from Harvard University in 1925.
Including the modern towns of Randolph & Holbrook

     and the city of Quincy, after the separation from Braintree in 1792-3.
