Biography

Abraham, son of Bennet Belknap and Grace Adam was born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England. He was baptized in Sawbridgeworth, 15 March, 1589/90 as Beltofte (1589 Old Style; 1590 New Style).[1]

He married 28 October 1617, Latton, Essex, England, as Beltoft to Mary Stallion. They lived at Netteswell, Essex, and North Weald, Essex. They emigrated from Epping, Essex and settled in Lynn, Massachusetts by 1637. He began use of name Belknap at some time between 6 December 1620 and 2 March 1624/5.

Church register North Weald spells the name "Beltrap" — a frequent misspelling of Belknap at that time. The same spelling occurs once in the church register at Sawbridgeworth. The deposition he signed by mark "A" at North Weald Bassett, Essex, in 1626 shows his name a3 Abraham Belknapp. His occupation in England is unknown. He was called a "Yoeman" in a deposition made 31 January 1626/27. He was alloted 40 acres at Lynn, Massachusetts in 1637. A farmer at Lynn. Died July 1643, at Lynn. Net value of estate, 47 pounds. When emigrating from England, Abraham was accompanied only by wife, Mary, and sons Samuel, Joseph and John.

Inventory of his estate 16 Feb 1643/4, four days before his will was proved, shows a total of 45 acres listed in five parcels: (A) "The houses and 5 acres of land" (B) "2 acres of planting land" (C) "2 acres of salt marsh" (D) "6 Acres salt marsh at Fox Hill" (E) "30 Acres at the village"[2]
