Abraham Ireland was the surveyor who in 1734 set up the "Old Mile Stone", with inscription on face fronting Harvard Square: "BOSTON 8 MILES 1734 AI". This distance was by the old road through Brookline and Roxbury, and the initials "AI" stand for Abraham Ireland. The stone now stands in the Old Burial Ground in Harvard Square, Cambridge, near his grave. [1]

From "In The Days of the Salem Witchcraft Trials" by Marilynne K. Roach: Abraham Ireland at the age of 14 was punished by the court for writing a contract for his soul. The court said it was an invitation to evil spirits.
