PEDIGREE

Generation 1:

Adriaen Arnolde Van Der Burchgraeff / Burggrave. born in 1535 or 1544 in Heusden, North Brabant, Netherlands.

He married Gertrude b.1563.

A soldier for the Dutch against the Spanish, he was rewarded with money and a gold medal for his valiant and heroic acts in the capture of Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands.

(The capture of Breda occurred on the 25 Feb 1590. About seventy Dutch soldiers were handpicked for the mission. They were hidden in the hollowed out hull of a peat barge with the peat piled on top of them. Near nightfall the barge was allowed into the Spanish controlled Castle of Breda to trade. In the middle of the night the Dutch stowaways jumped out and slaughtered the Spanish soldiers. Those that weren't killed, fled or surrendered. It was the first great victory for the Dutch in their struggle to gain independence from Spain. The men who took part were recognized as heroes.)

Generation 2

'''Arnold Adriaens van Der Burchgraeff / De Burggrave''' born c. 1522 in 's-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch), North Brabant, Netherlands and died in Heusden.

Arnold, or his father Adriaen, was the first of the family to become Protestant.

The southern branch of the family remained Catholic and followed the King of Spain during the wars. This branch of loyal subjects advanced far in terms of wealth, titles and influence.

Generation 3:

Adriaen de Burchgrave born 1503.

He lived in North Brabant.

Generation 4:

Arnold II De Burchggrave or Burggrave; born c.1480.

Nothing is known about him.

Generation 5:

Arnold 1 de Burchgrave or Burggrave born c.1460

He inherited all his father's feudal holdings and real estate. He is said to have left his father's land and settled in Brabant on his mother's land.

Arnold's wife was Anna Van Daele Gerritsdochter.

Generation 6:

Dirck de Burggrave born c.1440 and died on the 27 Jun 1519.

Dirck was married to Gertrude Van Grobbendonk.

Gertrude's family had land in Brabant. Her three sons moved from Altena (where Dirck's family came from) to Brabant. The Altena referred to is probably Altena, Drenthe, Netherlands, but could be Altena, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Generation 7:

'''Dirck de Burggrave''' born c.1425, who married '''Margaretha Houtappel.'''

Generation 8:

Jan Dirckszoon De Burggrave born c.1400

He swore allegiance to the Count of Holland, on the 22 Aug 1423, along with his cousin Jan De Burggrave.

Generation 9:

'''Dirck Janszoon de Burggrave''' born c. 1375.

Dirck is mentioned frequently in documents relating to the holdings of the Counts of Holland and the Dukes of Brabant.

He married Catharina de Boeckelaer Robbynsdochter.

Catharina held as a fief a piece of land called "Saryscamp" from Count Jacob of Holland.

Dirck received the power of attorney from Count Jacob to sell the land to the Cloister of Charteuse at St. Geertruydenberg, which he did on the 18 Mar 1418.

Generation 10:

Jan de Burggrave c. 1350

Generation 11:

Jan (?) de Borchgrave c. 1320

Generation 12:

'''Jan van Altena de Burggrave''' born about 1290 in Alm Kerke, Altena.

Jan was the first in this line to use the Burggrave (Burggraef/Borchgrave) name, which mean "Viscount." He probably did this to distinguish his line from other Van Altena branches, The name probably derived from land given to him as dowry from his wife's family.

On the 26 Sep 1321, when Jan was "over thirty years of age," he received the feudal rights to thirty morgens of land situated at Ter Wiele in Altena. This property was also the property of Gerrit Van Horne, his father-in-law. Thus some pedigrees indicate that Jan's wife was Isabelle De Hornes, daughter of Gerald De Hornes, the Count of Hornes (Horn, Limburg, Netherlands), and Jeanne De Louvain. The maternal lines trace back to become significant royal pedigrees.

Generation 13:

A descendant of the Counts of Cleve, the hereditary Warden of Van Altena c. 1260

The father (or grandfather) of Jan was granted the hereditary office of warden of the ancestral castle of the Van Altena family, a castle still in existence in 1913.

His family was descended from the Van Altena family, a family connected with the Counts of Cleve which traced its ancestry back to the Swan Knights in 945, and its mythical line back to the Teutonic God, Baldur.

Genealogie Adriaen Heyndricksz

  1. 2i. Sebastiaen Adriaensz van den Burghgraeff (~1551-~1613)
  2. 3ii. Hendrick Adriaense (~1570-<1612)
  3. iii. Dierckgen Aeriaens.
