PARENTS OF WILLIAM NOT KNOWN

In records found in the Orange, Amelia and Prince Edward County area of Virginia beginning in 1742, the name "William Crockett" appears. It is not known exactly how many different Williams there are, but it appears there are likely more than one.

A William Crockett married Agnes Ritchie on 14 Jan 1760, in Prince Edward.

He must have been married and had a family before Agnes, because records for Colonel Anthony Crockett of Kentucky establish Anthony's father was "William" and that Agnes Ritchie Crockett was Anthony's step mother. Anthony's birth date is given as 1756, before the marriage of William and Agnes in 1760.

Records of the name of the previous wife for William and mother of Anthony have not been found. Besides Anthony, William and his first spouse may have had a son named William and another named John.

Children of William and Agnes:
Identified in records of Prince Edward when the orphans of William and Agnes are bound out to members of the Ritchie family.

Mary:
"Mary married in Ky 21 Aug 1787 James Duncan. They had several children, including Alexander Crockett Duncan whose son, Samuel McAfee Duncan, was the recipient of the Maury letter."

Alexander:
"In 1785 Alexander is in Washington Co Va with William and Hamilton Crockett and some of the Ritchie family. Also he is on a 1787 tax list for Washington Co. VA"

Sarah:
"Sarah Crockett m James Cardwell in Mercer Co Ky 4 May 1788. Anthony Crockett gave consent and said she was over 21 and his sister"

Hamilton:
"Hamilton is in Washington Co Va in 1785 with Alexander Crockett and the Ritchies. He moved to Ky where he married 5 Aug 1790 Frances Biesfor in Mercer Co. He later moved to Franklin Co KY."

DNA
Participation by descendants of Anthony in the Crockett Families DNA Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Crockett/ has determined this Crockett family line is related to the families of Joseph Louis Crockett (wife Jeane Devigne) and Samuel Crockett (wife Esther Thompson).

Husband

Some sources claim that this Agnes Ritchie married William Crockett (1709-1770), but this Agnes Ritchie was far too young to have been married to that William Crockett, because David Crockett, [sic: not] William Crockett's son was born abt. 1727, just one year after the approx. date of this Agnes Ritchie.

Agnes was most probably married to another William Crockett, born 1722, died abt. 1767., where both William and Agnes were killed by Indians, according to several account.

From https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/crockett/3503/

Our ancestor Anthony Crockett's son Granville Crockett, left a record saying that Anthony's father was William Crockett. It is probable therefore, that Anthony was the son of William, who was born 1709 at New Rochelle, NY, the fourth son of Joseph 1 and Louise DeSaix Crockett. However, it is possible that Anthony was the son of William Crockett, a grandson of Joseph Louis and Louise Crockett, by their son John born in Ireland in 1707.

Anthony Crockett, our ancestor, was born in Prince Edward Co., Virginia, Nov 19, 1754. There is no record of his mother. His parents died when he was about ten years old, after which he lived with a relative, Samuel Crockett (note DLamel This Samuel's wife was Esther Thompson), in Botetourt Co., Va., until 1776. ....
