Sir John Fitz Roger, Knt., b. c. 1386-7; d. 1441; m 1406
He married Agnes de Mercaunt, of Seamer, Co. Suffolk in 1406, when only 19 years of age. He purchased "Benham-Valence" and other properties in Berks and bought 'Bryanstone" Dorset, which became the principal seats of the family. He was the entailed Lord of the vast Furneaux estates and is alleged to have earned and received Knighthood, through recognition of military services performed. Besides his numerous entailures he amassed a considerable personal property; and altogether was the representative of one of the wealthiest families of his section of England. The issue of marriage brought to his wife and himself two sons; John the elder and Thomas; and he died llll, l0/l, at Bryanstone, and their quartered escutcheon was carved on the tablet of his tomb in St. Marting Church thero. His will was dated 21 Sept., and proved 10 Nov. the year of his death; and afterward the prefix "Fitz” to the Roger name was dropped and ultimately the terminal "s" was added. Because of his great riches, ability and prominence, he was generally credited as the known patriarch in England, instead of his father . . . Arms: Rogers - 1&l, argent a mullet pierced sable, on a chief or . , a *leur-de-lis gules; Mercaunt - 2&3 argent à fret sable, a chief gules. Crest: a fleur-de-lis or, entitled to be enfilled with a grand-count's coronet.

It is believed that page 9, generation 3.: "Sir John Fitz Roger and Elizabeth Shuttlebroke" (Shottesbroke) is in error as the time period between generation 2 (Sir John Fitz Roger and Agnes Mordaunt) and generation 4 (Sir Henry Rogers and Annie Stornton) does not fit.
