Albert Eugene Brodribb was born on the 11th October 1813, the son of William Adams Brodribb and his wife Prudence Keene. He was baptised at St Andrew, Banwell, Somerset on the 10th April 1814. His father's abode was given as "Thornbury", Gloucestershire.
In 1816 his father was found guilty of "Administering an unlawful oath" & was sentenced to seven years fransportation. Fortunately, he was pardoned by the new Governor William Sorell on the journey over.
1818 William Adams Brodribb was joined by his wife and children [including Albert] on 15 Feb 1818, arriving in Hobart on the Duke of Wellington.[Travelled to Sydney on the Friendship" ].
On the 27th June 1857 at All Saints, Sandhurst, Victoria, Albert married to Rose Helen Neale. She may have been known as Ellen.
He worked at Coghill & Brodribb & was of Sutton Grange, near Castlemaine.
Albert died of a ruptured blood vessel onboard the Lincolnshire. He was aged 45.
Brodribb died in 1860 leaving everything to his widow. His will, prepared by Brodribb, Crisp and Lewis, of Melbourne, appointed his wife sole executrix. It was signed on 7th July 1857 and witnessed by K. E. Brodribb and E. McDougall. Under the partnership agreement everything had to be sold on the death of either partner but this was delayed until Rose Brodribb became 21 [in 1862]."
Hazelwood Station had an area of 25 square miles. The first lease holders were Albert Eugene Brodribb and William Bennett, who had married Brodribb's sister, Lavinia Ann Hasell Brodribb. Hazelwood was named after Mrs. Hasell Bennett, and Maryvale was named after the Bennett's eldest daughter, Mary Bennett, then a little girl of ten. It is thought that Yinnar, which is an aboriginal word meaning "woman" was so-called because Hazel (Brodribb) Bennett was the first white woman to live in this area. The Bennetts, 1844-1860 were succeeded by John MacMillan. The MacMillan family held the Hazelwood estate until 1919, when it was acquired by the Government for Soldier Settlement.
