Alfonso d'Avalos d'Aquino, IV Marchese di Pescara e del Vasto, was a condottiero of Spanish-Italian origin. born - 1502 , Ischia died - 31 March 1546 married - Maria d'Aragona in 1523 and had 5 children including;

  1. Innico d'Avalos d'Aragonia - (1536 - 1600), an Italian Cardinal
  2. Francesco Ferdinando d'Avalos (1537 - 1571), commander in chief of the Spanish army in lombardy and Piedmont. "The nephew of Francesco Ferninando I d'Avalos, inheriting his uncle's titles after 1525, fighting the French and the Venetians by his side. During the period 1526 - 1528, he fought under Hugo of Moncada, being captured in 1528 by the Genoese admiral Andrea Doria.

In july 1535 he was part of the naval troops reconquering the city of Tunis in North Africa. The failure on the third war against France trying to invade Provence, and the death of the first Governor of the Duchy of Milan, Antonio de Leyva, prompted him, in 1538, to accept the nomination as governor, replacing Marino Caracciolo, the second governor, becoming some sort of protector of literary and musical people. Wars with French and North Italians ended for a while with the Treaty of Crespy (1544). He also became a Knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece....... (car)

Caballero del Toisón de Oro (1531). General al principio al servicio de su primo hermano de Francisco Fernando, que heredó el Marquesado de Pescara. Después de la derrota de la flota castellana en el Golfo de Salerno, en 1528, fue hecho prisionero. Fué nombrado marqués de Vasto, en 1535, y comandó las tropas de tierra en el ataque a Túnez. En 1538, mientras ocupaba el cargo de gobernador deMilán, estaba involucrado en la guerra contra Francia y consiguió defender la ciudad hasta la Paz de Crépy. Un hombre apasionado de la cultura, era también poeta.
<p>Cavaliere del Toson d’Oro (1531). Generale, fu inizialmente al servizio del cugino Ferdinando Francesco, del quale ereditò il marchesato di Pescara. In seguito alla sconfitta della flotta castigliana nel golfo di Salerno, avvenuta nel 1528, fu fatto prigioniero. Divenne Marchese del Vasto nel 1535 e comandò le truppe di terra nell’impresa di Tunisi. Nel 1538, mentre ricopriva l’incaricodi governatore di Milano, fu impegnato nella guerra contro la Francia e riuscì a difendere la Città fino alla pace di Crépy.
