Rendell's Tauranga - Historic Tauranga From Above by Alf Rendell and Fiona Kean: Ninety-seven year old Alf Rendell has produced a stunning work in collaboration with his friend, respected Tauranga historian Fiona Kean. This very special book features aerial photographs of Tauranga and surrounds which were taken between 1946 and 1956 during a period when Tauranga started to grow from a small, coastal fishing village into a city. Alf Rendell was born in Whakatane on 2 November 1917. His father Robert John Rendell was a photographer, but business was poor as the effects of World War I were felt. The family moved to Tauranga where Robert eventually bought a photography business. In January 1939 Alf took over the business before leaving town to serve in World War II. On his return he built up the business and paid friends to take him up in their aircraft where he captured stunning shots of the local area. RENDELL, Alfred Hugh (Alf). On Friday, 27th December 2019 at Tauranga Hospital aged 102. Loving husband of the late Joan. Father and father-in-law of Kevyn and Hilary, Graham, Susan and Bill, Kay and Dave. Grandfather to Farah and Phil, Tamara, Lexie, Scott and Rhiannon, Stuart and Becki, Julia and Brendan, Michael, and Caitlin. Great-grandfather to Thea, Faelan, Owen and Odella. A funeral service for Alf will be held at Tauranga Park, 383 Pyes Pa Road, Tauranga on Saturday, 4 January at 10:30am.
