About Alice Catlett
Biography
Alice Gibson was born around 1707, presumably on the Conway-Gibson plantation in Richmond (now King George) County, Virginia (the birth place of Pres. James Madison, now known as Belle Grove). Her father, Jonathan Gibson 1st died in 1729 and her mother Elizabeth died about four years later, and Alice was named in both their wills. She married ca. 1727 to John Catlett 4th. Alice and John migrated to Orange County ca. 1737. (Bio by Mark Hale)

A HISTORY OF TWO VIRGINIA FAMILIES TRANSPLANTED FROM COUNTY KENT, ENGLAND, by Dr. & Mrs. William Carter Stubbs: Alice Gibson, d. Mar. 15, 1761, daughter of Jonathan Gibson, justice and burgess for Caroline, 1736-38-40. GARRETT, CATLETT, WARE AND RELATED FAMILIES, compiled by Sunie Garrett Talbert Elliott Fisher: In the Journal of the House of Burgesses of Virginia 1619-1776, it is recorded that on "24 May 1755, Alice Catlett (widow of John IV) petitions a slave that was hurt." An inventory of "Alice Catlett, deceased, King George County, Virginia, 3 March 1768" is listed page 6 of the Virginia Bond Book, 1765-1789.

To my two sons John and Thomas and my daughter Margarett 1860 acres of land in the Freshes of Rappa. River in the County of Essex, viz. to my son John the land he lives on and is divided from the other part as followeth beginning at the corner tree of the hundred acres of land I had in exchange of Charles Smith a little below the road in the line of Gillets patten... to the rolloing road ... to the land of Evans ... To my daughter in law Alice Catlett all my land in the fork of Pewmansend dureing her life or day of marriege and also four Negroes Sambo and Jenny and her two youngest children provided she makes no claime or title to those Negroes given by her husband to her wich he said I give him. In case my said daughter in law Alice Catlett make any claime to those Negroes then I give all to be equally divided between my five children John and Thomas and Mary and Elizabeth and Rebecca.
