About Alice Trotman

September 2014

There is no evidence to support this Alice as daughter of Sir Thomas Throckmorton, MP, of Totworth by his first wife Elizabeth Berkeley, and she has been disconnected from these parents.

The History of Parliament online member biography for Sir Thomas mentions one unnamed daughter.

According to A Who’s Who of Tudor Women: M this daughter was Margaret Throckmorton - who was committed to the custody of the Dean of Gloucester in 1593 as "a verie obstinate Recusant".

It looks like the profile source is this GEDCOM file going around - one example:

There is no daughter for Sir Thomas mentioned in Visitations of 1623:

And Maurice Trotman is not covered in the Trotman page:

However, there are references to Maurice & Morris Trotman here:

Gloucestershire notes & queries search for "Maurice Trotman"

Looks like a yeoman / merchant family ... Sir Thomas was landed gentry, it seems unlikely.

Source: Abstracts of records and manuscripts respecting the county of Gloucestershire Volume 2, Page 42 (Throckmorton of Tortworth).
This source mentions Alice Throckmorton as the daughter of Sir Thomas Throckmorton and Elizabeth Berkeley. The fact that she married Maurice Trotman, who was a yeoman, would make sense. Alice was the youngest daughter and by the time she was to be married, her father had been disgraced, imprisoned, and his power and influence severely dented. It is possible / likely that no noble / titled person would want to marry her. Thus she was married off to Maurice Trotman. Their descendants were the Davies and Jenner families. There is evidence that these families knew about their connection to the Berkeley family, especially the Jenners. The Berkeley family was started by Robert Fitzharding in the reign of Henry II, and some members of the Jenner family bear the middle name 'Fitzharding' as in Robert Fitzharding Jenner, the son on Dr Edward Jenner.
