Hayesville - Andrew D. Wike, 94, of Hayesville died Sunday, April 18, 2004, in a Murphy hospital.

A native of Swain County, Andrew lived in Clay County for the past 70 years. He was the son of the late Candler and Margaret Parris Wike. He was a retired cattle farmer. When he was 65, he went to work with the U.S. Forest Service in Murphy and worked there for 28 years. In July 2002, he was recognized as the oldest National Forest Service employee. It was put in his record that he worked circles around people much younger. The Employment Security Commission recognized him as the oldest part-time worker for the years 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2002. He received many awards with his work and displayed them with pride in his home. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, the Rev. Raymond McCray, who died in 1975 and James A. Thomas, who died in 1983 and one great-granddaughter, Katlyn Hayes.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Edna Scroggs Wike; two daughters, Faye McCray of Hayesville and Jo Ann Thomas of Jasper, Ga.; two sons, Eugene and Ernest Wike, both of Hayesville; two sisters, Katie Carter of Chyenne, Wyo., and Velma Terry of Machanicsville, Va.; brother, Sam Wike of Whittier; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville, with the Revs. Aud Brown and Warren Hall officiating. Burial will be in New Hope Baptist Church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Phillip McCray and Daniel, Gregory, Cormal, William and Hoover Wayne Wike.
