About Angus MacSween

Angus MacSween was the great-great-great-grandfather of 45th United States President Donald J. Trump.

He is recorded as Angus MacSween on his children’s death records. Also, he is mentioned on Hebridean Connections Website, Hebrides People Website and a book on Tong village and Croft History.

Last record of Angus was on the 1837 Tong Rental Roll. He was not on the 1844 roll. No record found for him on 1841 or 1851 Scotland Census. Son Donald showed living on croft in 1841 and 1844 records. No Death Record found (before compulsory Civil Registers commenced in 1855). His wife Margaret (née Campbell) was recorded as a Widow on her Death Record in 1858. She died in Tong. Angus had been on the croft in Tong since 1826, so it's likely that he died there.

From https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G8GX-46

Margaret Campbell was from Harris, Inverness-shire, Scotland and was born about 1780. She was the daughter of Roderick Campbell and Christina Maclennan, of Harris. Margaret was married to Angus MacSween, also of Harris and they had five children, John, Henrietta, Roderick, Donald and Christina.

Residences:

Angus MacSween and his family are recorded on a list of subtenants of Seaforth Head, Parish of Lochs in 1820. They were settled at 1 Seaforth Head. In the 1820s, the village was cleared to add to the sheep farm of Pairc/Park and the Macsweens were evicted and moved to a croft in the village of Tong, Civil Parish of Stornoway.

From "Croft History, Isle of Lewis, Volume 14." by Lawson, Bill.
See, page 122:

Angus MacSween was married to Margaret Campbell (1776-1858). Margaret ni'n Ruairidh, was the daughter of Roderick Campbell of Harris. Margaret had been living at Buanish (Buthainas), Parish of Lochs, Ross-shire, Scotland prior to her marriage. By 1820 Angus and his family were recorded as living at 1 Seaforth, Parish of Lochs, Ross-shire. In 1826 Angus MacSween and his family were removed from 1 Seaforth to a croft in Tong (Tunga), Parish of Stornoway, Ross-shire.

Their children:

  • John 1804-1888 was married to Isabella Ross and they lived at 12 Cromore (Cro Mor), Parish of Lochs.

John's second wife was Mary Carmichael of 18 Gravir (Grabhair), Parish of Lochs.

  • Donald 1816-? married Kirsty Campbell who was living at 14 Tong (Tunga), Parish of Stornoway. It is thought that [possibly] Donald later emigrated to America.

[Angus MacSween came from Harris prior to being removed to Seaforth, also called Seaforth Head, Parish of Lochs.]

Disputed origins

Angus MacSween (c1770-c1840) was not the son of Alexander MacQueen and his wife Margaret née Martin
August 30, 2024

ANGUS MACSWEEN, who was born about 1770 in Harris, part of the Isle of Lewis and Harris, Scotland, was NOT the son of Margaret MARTIN and Alexander MACQUEEN from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Margaret and Alexander MACQUEEN had a son ANGUS MACQUEEN who was born on Isle of a Skye about 1785.

ANGUS MACQUEEN‘S father, Alexander MACQUEEN died before 1802. In 1802, Alexander's widow Margaret MARTIN and their four children, including their son ANGUS MACQUEEN (born about 1785 on Skye) migrated to North Carolina, United States. ANGUS MACQUEEN, his mother Margaret née MARTIN MACQUEEN and his three siblings, Donald, Flora and Alexander, all died in America.

Meanwhile, ANGUS MACSWEEN (born about 1770 in Harris, part of the Isle of Lewis and Harris) married Margaret CAMPBELL, also of Harris. In 1820 they were living with their children, John, Henrietta, Roderick, Donald and Christian, in Seaforth Heads in Parish of Lochs. In about 1826 they were removed to croft No. 16 in Tong in Parish of Stornoway in the Lewis part of the Isle of Lewis and Harris, Scotland.

ANGUS MACSWEEN must have died about 1840. The last record found for ANGUS MACSWEEN was the Rent Roll of 1837, which showed him living on the family croft at Tong. The 1844 Rent Roll showed the croft had been passed to Angus' son Donald MACSWEEN. No death/burial record was found; although this was common before compulsory Scottish civil registration was introduced in 1855.

The death record of ANGUS MACSWEEN’s widow Margaret née CAMPBELL showed her living in Tong at the time of her death in 1858. It is likely ANGUS MACSWEEN also died in Tong where he had lived with his family since 1826.
