Ann Bolling

Additional Curator's Notes:

Ann Stith who married Robert Bolling is NOT the same person as Ann Meriwether Bolling. Two of Ann Stith Bolling's sons married Meriwether girls and that is when Meriwether became a part of Bolling and Stith naming patterns.

Ann Stith (1660-1709) was the daughter of John Drury Stith and wife Jane Mosby. She was born in c.1660 in Charles City Co., Virginia and died at Kippax Plantation, Prince George Co., Virginia. Ann married Robert Bolling, Virginia planter and public servant, in 1681. She was his second wife. They had a large family -- nine children -- who went on to shape Virginia history.

Children of Ann Stith and Robert Bolling:

• Jane Bolling (b. 1682), died young.
• Robert Bolling Jr. (1682–1749), married Anne Mary Cocke. Robert was the grandfather of Beverley Randolph, the eighth Governor of Virginia.
• Stith Bolling (1686–1727), married Elizabeth Hartwell.
• Edward Bolling (1687–1720), married Ms. Slaughter.
• Anne Bolling (1690–1750), married Robert Wynne.
• Drury Bolling (1695–1726), married Elizabeth Meriwether.
• Thomas Bolling (1697–1734).
• Agnes Bolling (1700–1762), married Richard Kennon.
• Molly Mary Bolling (b. 1702), died young.

ANNE STITH (John) became, in 1681, the second wife of Robert Bolling, the immigrant ancestor of that family in Virginia. He was born 26th December, 1646, arrived in Virginia 2d October, 1660, and in.1675, married for his first wife Jane, daughter of Thomas Rolfe and granddaughter of Pocahontas. By this marriage he had a son, John Bolling, born 27th January, 1676. Robert Bolling died 17th July, 1709 (WM. & MARY QUARTERLY, V., 275-'6; Bolling Memoirs; Slaughter's History of Bristol Parish). Will of John STITH, Sr. of Westover Parish, Charles City County, Virginia, Gentleman. To oldest son John, all land I live on and my mill lately built, and all other lands belonging to me except my land on eastern branch of Herring Creek, which I give to my son Drury. To my daughter Jane, now wife of Capt. Daniel Luellin, 5 pounds. To my daughter Ann, now wife of Mr. Robert Bolling, 10 pounds. To my daughter Agnes, now wife of Mr. Thomas Wynn, 5 pounds. All rest of my estate divided in three parts to my wife Jane and sons John and Drury. Drury is to take his share of personal estate at plantation left to him, but if more than his share, then surplus to the other two. To my loving friend Hugh Davis, 20 shillings to buy him a ring. He is to settle any difference among my executors. Ann married Robert V /Bolling/, son of John /Bolling/ and Marie /Carie/, in 1681 in Kippox, Charles City, Virginia. (Robert V /Bolling/ was born on 26 Dec 1646 in All Hollows, Barking, London, Middlesex, England and died on 7 Jul 1709 in Kippax, Charles City, Virginia.)

Born about 1660, in Charles Cittie Shire (sic), Colonial Virginia, the daughter of English immigrants, Major John and Jane (Mosby, Gregory, Parsons) Stith Sr.; a family of much notoriety and wealth in the flourishing James River tobacco plantations of seventeenth century Virginia.

At the age of twenty one, Anne met and married the elder English gentryman, Colonel Robert Bolling, Sr. and made her home at the opulent Kippax Plantation. Over looking the south bank of the Appomattox River, this plantation house was not unlike the royal estates of England. It was in these old mansions a generation lived in lordly manner, and entertained with lavish hospitality.

It was here, at Kippax Plantation, that Anne and the Colonel raised their nine children; Jane Bolling (b. 1682), Robert Bolling Jr. (1682–1749), married Anne Mary Cocke; (Robert was the grandfather of Beverley Randolph, the eighth Governor of Virginia); Stith Bolling (1686–1727), married Elizabeth Hartwell; Edward Bolling (1687–1720), married Ms. Slaughter; Anne Bolling (1690–1750), married Robert Wynne; Drury Bolling (1695–1726), married Elizabeth Meriwether (NOTE: it is the daughter of Drury and Eliz. that is [the only] Ann Meriwether); Thomas Bolling (1697–1734); Agnes Bolling (1700–1762), married Richard Kennon; Mary "Molly" Bolling (b. 1702), married Andrew Baker.
