About Ann Thomas

Ann Chew

  • Birth: 1706 - Herring Creek, Anne Arundel, Maryland
  • Death: May 22 1777 - West River, Anne Arundel, Maryland
  • Parents: Samuel Chew, IV, Mary Chew
  • Husband: Phillip Thomas
  • Children: John Thomas, Elizabeth Snowden, Mary Thomas, Levi Thomas, Samuel Thomas, Philip Thomas, Richard Thomas

Ann Thomas signed her will on 2 DEC 1771. A shortened version follows:

  • I give to my son Philip Thomas 100L current money.
  • I give to my son Richard Thomas 100L current money.
  • I give to my daughter Elizabeth Snowden 100L current money, also I give my daughter Elizabeth my silver baking dish and all my wearing apparel, likewise my desk with glass doors and all that may be therein at the time of my decease.
  • I give to my son-in-law William Thomas as a token of affection six silver tablespoons.
  • I give to my granddaughter Henrietta, as a token of my affection my diamond ring.
  • I give to my granddaughter Ann Thomas Pleasants 200L current money when she shall attain the age of 16 years.
  • I give to my maids, Hannah and Pat, as a reward for their faithful servitude their freedom which I desire may take place immediately after my death and not be accounted any part of my estate.
  • I give to my son John Thomas and his heirs forever all the residue and remainder of my estate of what nature or kind after the payment of my just debts.
  • I appoint my son John Thomas executor of my estate.
  • Presented to the court for probate 21 JUL 1777.[3]

It seems likely that Ann Thomas lived with her son John in her old age and died on the estate called "Lebanon" which was left to John Thomas in the will of Philip Thomas.

Ghost

Note- Honorable witnesses have soberly given credibility to the story that there is indeed a ghost, believed to be a later Ann Chew, who in 1724 married Philip Thomas (a forebear of Whitall Thomas Clevenger who now lives in another famous old house in the county.) The wedding was a Quaker ceremony, held at Maidstone, and the marriage certificate was signed by all the witnesses. No one knows what event left the spirit of the "grey lady" unable to rest, but during the last thirty years, Maidstone's corporal residents and their little grey lady have co-habited tranquilly, neither disturbing the other.
