..........................ANN TURNER LISTED................ ..............................IN THE.......................
............................1790 Tax Census................ ...........................HENRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA.......... ..........................(PERSONAL PROPERTY)..............
In the Census page shown at the right, Ann Turner is listed. Her husband Shadrack Turner died in 1784, six years earlier. She appears to be living alone, as the category for "Free whites over 16" is marked "1", she does not own slaves, and she owns four horses. Ann would have been age 66 in 1790. This census does not reference land holdings, as it is a tax census for personal property.
Two of Ann's sons are also listed in the same census: .............Larkin Turner April 3, 1790.................. .............William Turner April 27, 1790.................
Larkin and William appear to be living in separate households from their mother.
NOTE: In 1790, the year this census was taken, Henry County, Virginia, was reduced in size when the county of Patrick was created (named for the famous orator, Patrick Henry). President George Washington had been inaugurated a year earlier, in 1789. Ten years later, in 1800, Henry County had a population of 5,260 (3,715 whites, 1,415 black slaves, and 130 free blacks).

.....Anne Pollard Turner and her husband Shadrack Turner were the progenitors of many Turner descendants in Southwest Virginia (Henry County, their home, Franklin County, Patrick County, etc.) and today hundreds across the United States.
.....Today the homeplace, or "Plantation House" as it was called in the 1700's, of Shadrack and Ann, is known as "Kings Grant" or the "Old Turner Place" and is listed on The National Register of Historic Places, located in Henry County, very near the community of Henry, Franklin County, Virginia.
