About Anson Graves
Anson was a Chippewa man of the Red Lake Chippewa tribe
Map of Red Lake Indian Reservation, Minnesota 1911
Red Lake Band of Chippewa, it is unique as the only "closed reservation" in Minnesota. In a closed reservation, all land is held in common by the tribe and there is no private property. The tribe claims the land by right of conquest and aboriginal title; they were not reassigned to it by the United States government. The Red Lake Band of Chippewa refused to join with six other bands in organizing as the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe in the mid-1930s; at the time, its people wanted to preserve their traditional system of hereditary chiefs, rather than forming an electoral government. Seven principal clans (doodems) found on the Red Lake Indian Reservation are makwa (bear), mikinaak (turtle), owaazisii (bullhead), nigig (otter), migizi (eagle), waabizheshi (marten), and ogiishkimanisii (kingfisher).
Biography:
Anson Graves was born c. 1891 to unknown parents, both from Minnesota presumably Chippewa. He married Julia Eva but her surname has not been identified. He was one of five siblings, although because the surnames are different he may have been an only child with two sets of adopted siblings, one named Smith, and the other named Howard.
The State School for the Feeble Minded (aka Fairbault State Hospital) was constructed in 1881 and razed in 1957.
Anson was an inmate of the Minnesota School for Feeble-Minded and Colony for Epileptics
on September 10, 1918 (no record of when he was admitted), and was transferred to and admitted to the Canton Asylum on October 10, 1918. In the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson states that he was admitted on October 10, 1918, diagnosed as an epileptic, and died on February 12, 1926. (Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes recurrent seizures, which are episodes of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Epilepsy is defined as having two or more unprovoked seizures.)
While he died at Canton, his remains were not buried there. A search of cemeteries in Beltrami County turned up empty. It is unknown where he was buried, but it was NOT in the Hiawatha Cemetery at the canton Asylum.
His profile is part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum.
