Aquila Chase was born about 1618 in England and died about Dec 27, 1670 in Newbury, Essex Co, Massachusetts. According to Virkus he emigrated 1636 from England to Massachusetts. According to Colket he immigrated 1639 to Hampton, New Hampshire. Residence 1646 Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts. Will drawn: 10 Dec 1670 Died: 27 Dec 1670 (some sources say 29 Dec, but most 27 Dec) Will Proved: 28 Mar 1671. He is buried in Oldtown, Massachusetts.

Some believe that Aquila and brother Thomas Chase were employed by their uncle, Thomas Chase, part-owner of the ship "John And Francis" and thus became navigators and found their way to America. This theory was strengthened by the fact that Aquila was granted a house lot and six acres of marsh by the inhabitants of Newbury, Massachusetts "on condition that he do go to sea and do service in the Towne with a boat for foure years".

There is a well established fact that he was the first person to pilot a vessel across the bar at the mouth of the river.

Caught in the act

Sometime before Aquila Chase moved from Hampton, New Hampshire, to Newbury, he was seen gathering peas on Sunday.  At the Quarterly Court held at Ipswich, September 29, 1646, Aquila and his wife and David Wheeler, his brother-in-law, all of Hampdon, were presented for gathering peas on the Sabbath.  One handed down tradition states that Aquila and David were returning home from a bountiful fishing day and that upon their arrival Ann proceeded to the garden in preparation for a meal celebrating their catch.  It came to pass that they were caught and were supposed to be punished for their act.

Aquila Benjamin CHASE, II was born on 9 April 1618. He was married to the former Anne WHEELER around 1645 in Hampton, New Hampshire. Anne was born around 1624 in Salisbury, England. Together they had at least eleven children. According to his last will & testament, Aquila passed away on 21 December 1670 and his wife Anne died on 21 April 1687, both in Newbury, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

Because incorrect information has been replicated over and over, we are quoting extensively from the publication that disproved these claims:

The general claim has been made that the brothers, Aquila and Thomas Chase, were descendants of the Chesham family of Chases in England. [See George B. Chase, A Genealogical memoir of the Chase family…, Boston, MA: H.W. Dutton Son (1869).] ...

This connection has been given in practically every publication relating to Chase families that has later appeared, but our investigations fail to confirm it.

"It was assumed, or claimed, that the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase were sons of the Aquila Chase who was baptized in Chesham, 7 Aug 1580. The names and dates are entirely consistent with the supposition, but the facts studied at close range show that the assumption is not correct.

"Extensive research shows that the above named Aquila(1) Chase went from Chesham to London, there married, was the father of six children, was a merchant tailor, lived in Knight Rider's street... and, with his wife and five of his [six] children was there buried.

"The parish records fail to show that he had a son Thomas, but they do show that he had a son Aquila... The parish register further shows that Aquila Chase, the tailor, and Aquila his son, there baptized, were also buried there. [our emphasis] As there was only one Chase family living in Knight Rider's street, 1606 to 1660, we feel justified in assuming that Aquila and Thomas Chase, the Hampton brothers, could not be the sons of Aquila Chase of Chesham, England. They may be descended from the Chesham family but our researches fail to show such a connection.
"The use of the comparatively infrequent name of Aquila in both Chesham and New England is, however, very suggestive of a connection between the two families.[1]

Therefore, we are detaching Aquila Chase and Martha Jelliman as the parents of the Hampton brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase .

He is said to have been born at Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and to have sailed for America on March 24, 1633-34 in the ship "Mary and John," bringing his wife Ann and six children and leaving four sons in England. The following year he removed to the settlement on the north bank of the Merrimac River that was called Salisbury after 1640, and as one of its original proprietors, in 1641 he received land there which he still held and paid tax on as late as 1653, notwithstanding he had removed to Newbury, Massachusetts, before 1650. Aquila settled in Newbury, Massachusetts, about 1646. He formerly lived in Hampton, NH, where he and his brother Thomas received grants of land in June 1640. As owner of a houselot, he was listed among those entitled to a share in the common lands. He sold his land in Hampton to his brother Thomas, as shown by town records.

Aquila and Ann, along with Ann's brother David Wheeler, were presented and fined "for gathering pease on the Sabbath". They were admonished by the court and fined.

Aquila was probably buried in the First Parish Yard at Oldtowne as that and the original yard at the river were the only ones in use at the time of his death.

By the terms of his will the place passed into the hands of his oldest son Aquila, who died in 1720.

AQUILA CHASE, born in England in 1618, deposed "aged about forty eight years", 25 Sept. 1666, died in Newbury, Massachusetts, 27 Dec.1670. He married about 1644, ANN WHEELER, born in Salisbury, Eng., about 1624, died in Newbury Massachusetts, 2l Apr. 1687, daughter of John and Agnes (Yeomans) Wheeler. She married secondly in Newbury,14 June 1672, DANIEL MUSSILOWAY, who came from Ireland.

Thomas Chase and his brother Aquila settled early in Essex County, Massachusetts. The name of Aquila being unusual, it is used as a basis for evidence that the family was of Chesham, Bucks, England, where an Aquila Chase, son of Robert and Joan (Bishop) Chase, was baptised 14. Aug1580. Robert and Joan (Bishop) Chase had ten children Of whom seven were sons. It is assumed that this Aquila was the father of Thomas and Aquila, the emigrants to America, but his marriage has not been found nor their baptisms. They very probably were grandsons of Robert Chase but might have been fathered by any one of the seven sons.

Aquila Chase seems to have been a man of peaceable disposition who minded his own affairs for in his whole life he only appears in Court twice. At the time it was quite the popular amusement to go to court and apparently the inhabitants of the towns spent a large amount of time, either as witnesses or principals, in actions at law. In 1646, Aquila Chase of Hampton, N. H., was presented at Court with his wife and David Wheeler, probably his brother-in-law, "for gathering pease on the Sabbath." When the case came to trial in 1647, the constable reported that they were not in Hampton but had gone to Newbury. A year later they were all admonished. His second appearance in Court was when he made the deposition giving his age. (Essex Co., Court Files 1: 110.) He left the following will.

Witness by these presents that I Acquilla Chase of Newbury in the countye of Essex in New England being weake in body, yett of sound & pfect memory, for divers causes and consideration me thereunto moveing, doe make this my Iast will and testsment.... To my well-beloved wife Ann I give and bequeath my house barne and orchard and all my lands both Eareable and pasture and marsh meadow ground, lyeing and being in the bounds of Newbury aforesaid together with all my goods and chattells both within dores & without. Allthe sayde house and land beforementioned I give unto my well beloued wife during the time of her widdowhood, paying unto my daughter Ann Chase five pounds in corne or neate cattle, and five pounds more to pay unto my daughter Priscilla Chase to be payd within twelve months after the day of their marriages. Also I will that my wife give unto my sonn Thomas Chase at the age of one and twenty, Teen pounds in corne or neate cattle pvided the sayd Thomas doe abyde and serve with his mother to the said age.And if his mother and hee the said Thomas see cause that hee should serve for a trade , with any other man soe that he have the benefitt, of a trade, then his mother, my well beloved wife, is to pay unto the sayd Thomas, but six pounds in the like pay before mentioned, for the rest of my children my will and testament is, That Ann my wife, shall give unto them all shee sees good accordiny to her abillitye, and at the end of her naturall life, I give and bequeath all house, housing & lands before mentioned unto Aquila Chase my Eldest sonn, or if Ann my wife marry, my sonn, is to posses all my housing and lands, paying unto his mother three pounds per annum as long as she liveth or three score pound which shee pleaseth. further my will is that Aquilla my sonn shall pay to his brother John Chase the sum of tenn pounds... Aquila Chase appears first at Hampton, New Hampshire, A company under the leadership of Rev. Stephen Bachiler is supposed to have commenced the settlement on Oct 14, 1638. (Dow's History of Hampton, 10-11). Early in the year 1639 a new band of settler came with Mr. Timithy Dalton, who became associate pastor of the Hampton church. The town was incorporated by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony May 22 1639. It is probable that Aquila and Thomas Chase came with the second company as it appears that emigration was greatly diminished by the year 1640.

Various traditions are extant about the date and manner of their arrival in this country, but they are only traditions with little likelihood of ever being anything else, due to the lack of preservation, or later loss, of the shipping lists of that period. The first town meeting of Hamton,of which there is a record, was held Oct 31 1639, and Dec 24 of the same year land was allotted to fifteen grantees, the first grants being small house lots. In June 1640 other persons became grantee, among them being Aquila Chase and Thomas Chase. The Hampton records show that in 1640 there was granted to Aquila Chase six acres for a house lot. In 1644 an additional grant was recorded of six acres of "upland meadow and swamp," which he sold to his "brother Thomas" on his removal to Newbury.

The home lot of Aquila Chase was a part of what has long been known as the Perkins homestead, Here undoubtedly, he erected a log house which he occupied until the summer in 1646. The homestead was located south of Meeting House Green, near the marshes on the road to the ancient Tide Mill. Aquila Chase before he removed to Newbury was seen gathering pease on the first day of the week and at the Quarterly Court held at Ipswich, Sept 29 1646, he and his wife, and David Wheeler, his brother-in-law, all "of Hampton," were presented for gathering pease on the Sabbath. (Records and Files of the Quarterly Court of Essex County, I:110) At the next session of the Court held at Ipswich, March 30, 1646/47, they were presented again for the same offense and the constable reported that the summons had been sent to Hampton and that the parties were not there but "were gone to Newbury". On March 28 1657, they were admonished and their fines were remitted.

The removal must have been soon after the pea-picking episode as he was not to be found in Hampton when the Court summons of Sept 29 1646 reached there. A deposition presented at the Quarterly Court held in Ipswich Sept 25 1666, mentions "Acciquilla Chas, aged about forty-eight years," which would make 1618 the year of his birth. Aquila Chase lived in Newbury until his death Dec 27 1670. The place of his burial is unknown but it was probably in the grave yard at Oldtown, Bristol, Massachusetts, as the yard at Sawyer's hill was not in use unit thirty years later.

1. AQUILA1 CHASE, born about 1618, came to New England about 1639.(a) In June, 1640, he and his brother, Thomas Chase, were granted land at Hampton, New Hampshire. Both are called seamen and it seems likely that they had been sailors on one of the boats, that were bringing settlers to the New England coast. There is no indication that either man had learned a trade or that either was of the Puritan faith. Both brothers signed documents with their marks.

Aquila Chase married about 1644 Anne, daughter of John and Ann (Yeoman) Wheeler of Hampton, and formerly of Salisbury, county Wilts, England. In 1646 the town of Newbury, Massachusetts, offered him a grant of land on condition that he "do goe to sea and do service in the town with a boat for four years." He removed to Newbury the same year. He was commander of a coasting vessel between Newburyport and Boston. His oldest child was born at Hampton, the others at Newbury. He died at Newbury, December 21, 1670, aged 52, having lived there twenty-four years

Acquila's birth year of 1618 comes from a deposition at the Quarterly Court held in Ipswich 25 Sept 1666 which mentions "Acciquilla Chas, aged about forty-eight years," [1] There was a Chase family in Chesham, Buckingham, England which used the Aquila name. Because of the name's unusual nature, it has frequently been assumed that the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase came from the Chesham family. For example, Cutter states: [2] " The Chase family is of ancient English origin, the name being derived, undoubtedly, from the French word chasser, to hunt. The ancestral seat of the American branch of the family, in England, was at Chesham, Buckinghamshire, through which there is a rapidly flowing river, the Chess. (I) Thomas Chase, of Chesham, was descended from the ancient family there. (II) John, son of Thomas Chase, was also of Chesham. (III) Mathew, son of John Chase, was of Chesham. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Boudd. Children: Richard, John, Mathew, Thomas, mentioned below; Ralph, William. (IV) Thomas {2}, son of Mathew Chase, was of Hundrich, in the parish of Chesham. Aquila Sr., the son of Richard Chase, became a merchant tailor in London. His son Aquila was baptized In 1626 in the church of St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey, but he was also buried there in 1659/60. Perhaps a documented connection to the Chesham family will eventually be found, but so far it is only unsubstantiated conjecture. Similarly, there are various traditions about the date and manner of arrival of Thomas and Aquila Chase in America, but there is no recorded substantiation of these traditions. Thomas and Aquila Chase first appear in Hampton, New Hampshire in 1640 when they are granted six acre house lots. A company under the leadership of Rev. Stephen Bachiler began the settlement of Hampton on 14 Oct 1638. Timothy Dalton, who became associate pastor of the Hampton church, came with a second band of settlers in early 1639. The town was incorporated 22 May 1639 by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It has been suggested that Aquila and Thomas Chase came with Dalton's company as emigration was greatly reduced by 1640. However, at the first recorded town meeting of Hampton held Oct 31 1639, and on Dec 24 1639 when fifteen grantees were given small house lots. Aquila and Thomas were not mentioned. In 1644 Aquila had an additional grant of four acres of upland meadow and swamp, and in 1645/6 he held one share in the town's common lands. From this record, it is presumed that he was a mariner or fisherman, and there is a tradition that he was the first person to pilot a vessel across the bar at the mouth of the Merrimac. Before he left Hampton, Acquila had married Ann Wheeler. On 29 September 1646 Aquila, Ann, and Ann's brother David Wheeler, all "of Hampton," were presented at Quarterly Court in Ipswich for the sacrilege of picking peas on Sunday. At the next session of the Court held 30 March 1646/47, they were presented again for the same offense. The constable reported that the summons had been sent to Hampton and that the parties were not there but "were gone to Newbury." [4] On 28 March 1647/48, they were admonished and their fines were remitted.[5] Apparently Aquila sold his dwelling in Hampton at the time of his removal, for in 1667, when he sold his remaining land there to his brother, it was excepted as having been disposed of twenty years before. Aquila was a commoner of Newbury in 1653, and in 1651 signed the petition asking the General Court to remit a heavy fine imposed upon his son-in-law Lieut. Robert Pike. About 1659 he sold his first Newbury homestead to Robert Rogers and presumably built on his six acre planting lot, farther westward, where he lived until his death on 27 December 1670. The place of his burial is not known but it was probably in the grave yard at Oldtown since the graveyard at Sawyer's hill would not be in use for another thirty years. The will of Aquila Chase of Newbury was made 10 December 1670, and proved 28 March 1671: "Witness by these presents that I, Aquilla Chase of Newbury in the Countye of Essex New England being but weake in body, yett of sound and perfect memory, for divers causes and considderrations me therunto moveing, doe make this my last will and testament, And doe dispose of my lands. goods, and chattells, as followeth: First I bequeath my soul into the hands of my blessed Saviour & redeemer Jesus Christ in an asured hope of a resurrection, and my body be buryed when it shall please the Lord to call me hence. To my well beloved wife Ann I give and bequeath, my house barne and orchard and all my lands both Eareable pasture and marsh meadow ground, lyeing and being in ye bounds of the Towne of Newbury aforesayd together with all my goods and chattels, both within door and without. All the sayde house and land before mentioned I give unto Ann my well beloved wife during the time of her widowhood, paying unto my daughter Ann Chase five pounds, in corne or neate cattle, and five pounds more to pay, unto my daughter Prissilla Chase, to be payd within twelve months, after the day of their marriages. Also I will that my wife give unto my sonn Thomas Chase at the age of one and twenty Tenn pounds in corne or neate cattle, provided the sayd Thomas doe abyde and serve with his mother to the sd age, And if his mother and hee the sd Thomas see cause, that hee should serve for a trade with any other man soe that hee have ye benifitt of a trade, then his mother my well beloved wife, is to pay unto the sayd Thomas but six pounds in the like pay before mentioned, for the rest of my children my will and testament is that Ann my wife shall give unto them all shee sees good according to her abillitye, And at the end of her naturall life, I give and bequeath all my house, housing & lands before mentioned unto Aquilla Chase my Eldest sonn, of if Ann my wife marry, my sonne is to possess all my housing and lands, paying unto his mother three pounds per annum as long as she liveth or three score pounds which shee pleaseth, Furthermore my will is, that Aquilla my sonn shall pay to his brother John Chase the Summ of tenn pounds in corne or neate cattle And tenn pounds more the sd Aquilla, is to pay unto his Brother Daniell in ye like pay viz. corne, or neate cattle. Furthermore my will is yt my sonne-in-law Charles [Annis] shall have my boate loade of grass or sedge of the lower end of Penny Island as long as he liveth, and nobody to molest him till he hath a boateloade, Furthermore my will is that my sonne Aquilla pay unto his Brother Moses Chase Tenn pounds in corne & cattle. Also my will is that Aquilla pay unto my daughter Sarah three pounds within two years after her mothers decease and to pay unto my daughter Mary Twenty shillings. And further my will is that Aquilla my sonne pay unto his sister Elizabeth Chase foure pounds in the like pay. Also my will is, that Aquilla pay foure pounds in the like paye to his sister Ruth. All of which summs am to be payd in two yeares after the decease of Ann my well beloved wife. And I doe apoynt Ann my well beloved wife, to be sole executrix of this my last will and testament, & further, & doe appoynt Ensigne Stephen Greenleafe and William Chandler to be the overseers of this last will & testament. Further my will is that Aquilla my sonne shall pay to his Brother Thomas Chase before mentioned the Sum of tenn pounds in the like pay with the rest of my children and if any of my younger children be not of age within two years after the decease of my wife, then they are to stay for their portions till they be of age. Stephen Greenleaf testified upon oath in Court held at Ipswich the 28 of March 1671 that this is the last will and testament of Aquilla Chase & that he was of a disposing mind as Attest Robert Lord cleric (Ipswich County Court 1666-1682 p. 134-5). The inventory totalled £336, the homestead being valued at £100. The farm was well stocked and there was much produce in the barn. A monument has been dedicated in Newbury, Massachusetts to the memory of the men and women who settled in Newbury from 1635 to 1650 and founded its municipal, social and religious life. This monument contains the names of ancestors Aquila Chase, Henry Jaques, Richard Kent, John Knight, Nathaniel Merrill and Richard Pettingell.
