ARTHUR JONES III married MARGARET BARRETT (c1634-1696). Arthur was a cedar merchant and a cooper.

Arthur Jones III is first found in extant records in Norfolk County, Virginia in 1645 (at about 21 years of age) when he was paid for a boat, provisions, powder and shot.

It is known that Arthur Jones III traveled between England and Virginia and that he, Margaret and their son, Arthur, settled in Virginia for a time. First, in 1660 William Cooke and Arthur Jones are mentioned in Virginia records as “shippers of goods” aboard the HONOR, which was bound from London to Virginia. Then, on September 29, 1664, William Miles and William Cooke, Sr. were granted a patent for 1,100 acres of land in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, located on the second branch of the Blackwater, for the transportation of twenty-two persons; Henry Wilson, Job Virgin, William Gobson, John Johnson, Arthur Jones, Samuel Jenkins, Edward Miller, Sampson Clarke, Arthur Jones, Peter Plumer, John Harris, Margaret Jones, Hanay Boyce, John Jackson, Stephen Pettus, William Stephens, William Edwards, Edward James, Thomas Petegrew, Stephen Williams, and Edward Williamson (Nugent, p. 525/Virginia Patent Book 5, p. 399 (460).

Arthur and Margaret Jones later made the decision to move to Bermuda where he became a member of the Assembly of Bermuda for Hamilton Tribe by 1687. Arthur Jones died about 1692 at Hamilton Tribe, Bermuda, leaving a will, dated August 29, 1692. In it he names his brother, Richard, deceased, and Richard’s children; Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Susannah (Hallett, p. 329).


Margaret Baratt/Barrett was born abput 1634. She married Arthur Jones on May 16, 1655, in London, England. They had four known children during their marriage. She died in 1696 in Bermuda at the age of 62.

Margaret Barrett-Jones married (2) Bernard Hutten following Arthur’s death. She also left a will in Bermuda, written on June 9, 1696.

Arthur Jones died about 1692, leaving a will in Bermuda, dated August 29, 1692. In it he names his brother, Richard, deceased, and Richard’s children; Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, and Susannah (Hallett, p. 329).
