Arturo Toscanini

Arturo Toscanini (Italian pronunciation: [ar%CB%88tu%CB%90ro toskaˈniːni]; March 25, 1867 – January 16, 1957) was an Italian conductor. One of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 19th and 20th century, he was renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his photographic memory. He conducted at La Scala from 1899, the Metropolitan Opera (New York) from 1908 to 1915, La Scala again after the war, then the New York Philharmonic (1928-36). As music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra from 1937 to 1954, he became a household name (especially in the U.S.) through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire.
