About Azéca

Curators Note: According to a number of 19th-century French local histories, sisters Ervise and Azeka were the heiresses of Bar-sur-Seine who married brothers Renaud and Milon de Tonnerre around 1000 CE. These marriages merged the houses of Tonnerre and Bar-sur-Seine.

  • Manuel d'histoire, de généalogie et de chronologie de tous les états du globe ..., Volume 2 by AMHJ (Anthony Marinus Hendrik Johan) Stokvis (Leiden, 1889, p. 85): a genealogical chart of the counts of Auxerre, Tonnerre, Bar-sur-Seine, and the counts and dukes of Nevers

Coutant notes the role Azeka played, especially through her sons:

Malendina sup. Sequanam in comitate latiscensi apud Barrum constructa, dedi fratris Michaelis arch. Tornodoro, 1068 (2). »

In English:

We find it in a charter of Rainard, son of Milon III and Azeka, bishop of Langres. This pastor gives the abbey of Saint-Michel de Tonnerre the church of Bar-sur-Seine, which he had just had rebuilt because it had been destroyed by an overflow of enemies. - This donation explains very clearly that the territory of Bar-sur-Seine is part of the "pagus latiscensis" (1). Azeka, Countess of Bar-sur-Seine, the bishop's mother, also makes a similar donation and further designates Bar as being located in this pagus: "Ego Azeka notu fieri rupio et quo l ... Malendina sup. Sequanam in comitate latiscensi apud Barrum constructa, dedi fratris Michaelis arch. Tornodoro, 1068 (2). »
