John Gale, Sr. married in 1667 in Whitehaven, England to Mary Carlisle (b.1652 in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England, Great Britain christened in 1652 in St Nicholas Church, Whitehaven, Cumberland, England, d. Jun 1703, burial: 21 JUN 1703 in St Nicholas Church Yard, Whitehaven.

Mary was the daughter of Lancelot Carlisle (of Cairns, Cumberland, England). Lancelot Carlisle was, supposedly, the descendant of Sir William de Carlell of Torthorwald, County Dumfries. Mary Carlisle was the co-heir to her father's estate.

Mary Carlisle's mother was Barbara Johnstone (of Bridekirk).

EDWARD SPEDDING, of Whitehaven, co. Cumberland, m. circa 1684, Sara, dau. and co-heir of Lancelot Carlisle, of Cairns, by his wife, Barbara Johnstone (see Chapter I., Part II.), and sister to Mary Carlisle, who m. John Gale, of Whitehaven. She d. 29 Sept., 1716.
