Bartholomew first bore arms in the War of the Breton Succession, in the expedition of 1345. He fought as a knight banneret in the division of the Prince of Wales at the Battle of Crécy (1346) and was present at the Siege of Calais (1347). In 1348, he was one of the twenty-five Founder Knights of the Order of the Garter. He was made constable of Wallingford Castle in 1351.
He succeeded his father as Baron Burghersh in 1355. Continuing in the French wars, he was with the Black Prince in his chevauchée of 1356, and held off a French ambush outside Romorantin, a battle which ended in the capture of that city. The campaign ended with the Battle of Poitiers, wherein he captured the Count of Ventadour. He also served in the unsuccessful expedition of 1359.

Son and heir to Sir Bartholomew de Burghersh and Elizabeth de Verdun. Grandson of Sir Robert de Burghersh, Lord Burghersh and Maud Badlesmere, Sir Thebaud de Verdun and Maud de Mortimer.
Husband of Cecily de Weyland, daughter and heiress to Sir Richard Weyland and his wife, Joan. They were married before 10 May 1335 and had one daughter, Elizabeth, who married Edward le Despenser.
Secondly, husband of Margaret Gisors, daughter of Thomas of London and widow of Henry Picard, vintner of London. They married after 1354 and before 1366.
Bartholomew accompanied King Edward III to Flanders in 1339, and took part of the French invasions. He accompanied the king to Brittany in 1342, fought at the Battle of Crecy in 1346 in the retinue of Edward the Black Prince. Bartholomew was a founder of the Order of the Garter, fulfilled a religious vow in his journey to the Holy Lands in 1354, fought at Poitiers 19 Sept 1356, and was considered one of the most distinguished warriors of the age.
Bartholomew accompanied King Edward III on his last and most strenuous invasion of France which ended with the treaty of Bretigny 08 May 1360, when Bartholomew finally returned home.
Bartholomew and Cecily were granted free warren (ability to hunt freely) in their lands at Witnesham, Henley and Swilland, Suffolk in 1349. In 1366 he received a licence to celebrate mass at his manor in Henden in Sundrige, Kent.
His widow remarried to William Burcester of Lesnes, Kent, Sheriff of Kent, and died 01 July 1393.
