Caleb Barber

Biography

Caleb Barber, the son of Samuel Barber and Ann Cory, was born 19 December 1727 in Richmond, Washington County, Rhode Island, and died there at age 92 in 1816. His will was proved September 1816.

Caleb4 Barber married first on 6 January 1755 at Richmond to Elizabeth Niles, daughter of Ebenezer Niles and Sarah Kenyon. She died there before July 1781.

Caleb4 Barber married secondly on 19 July 1781 at Richmond to Thankful Babcock, daughter of Samuel Babcock of Westerly, R.I.

Children of Elizabeth Niles and Caleb4 Barber, born at Richmond, Washington County, Rhode Island:

1. Benjamin5 Barber b. 25 May 1756. Married Sarah Tefft.
2. Sarah5 Barber b: 17 April 1762. Married Taber Tefft.
3. Caleb5 Barber, Jr. b: 25 Nov 1764. Married 1) Joanna Tefft 2) Elizabeth Baker.
4. Mary5 Barber b: 3 Dec 1772. Married Daniel James.

Caleb4 Barber inherited his father's homestead in Richmond, R.I. - 1/2 of the sawmill. His will prob. in Richmond, Sept. 1816 mentions sons Benjamin & Caleb., daus. Sarah & Mary & several grd-ch. Caleb4 Barber lived on Bald Hill, near Arcadia Dist., No. 8., built "Barber's Academy," erected near his home. the only requirement to attend this school was to be clean and healthy.
