About Capitán Fernando Durán y Chávez
Information provided by Joseph H. Sanchez, 6th grandson
Don Fernando Duran y Chávez, born circa1651 died c. 1715.
Escaped the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 which resulted in the expulsion of the Spanish settlers south to El Paso. In 1692 Sante Fe was recaptured along with twelve other towns.
Fernando Duran y Chaves was one of New Mexicans of the volunteer army in the successful campaign to resettle New Mexico. In 1692 he was granted the Atrisco Land Grant (in the Albuquerque area) by de Vargas, on the condition that he personally settle it with other settlers. The Atrisco Land Grant totaled 41,533 acres extending west of the Rio Grand in the area where Fernando's father Don Pedro lived prior to the Pueblo Revolt. Having met the conditions of the grant, he gained formal possession of the land in 1703.
Don Fernando escaped the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 along with his wife Lucia Hurtado de Salazar and children and returned in 1692 to resettle New Mexico. In about 1684, Don Pedro Duran y Chaves ll and his extended family and other New Mexico families moved to the valley of Coyachic in Nuevo Viscaya in northern Nuevo Espana. His son Fernando did not settle this area with his family and instead returned to New Mexico. I wonder why Fernando did not follow his father and extended family to settle in the valley of Coyachic.
