Edward Johnson, son of William (2) and Esther (Wiswall) Johnson, was born in Woburn, March 19, 1658, and died there August 7, 1725. He was a deacon in the church. He was ensign, lieutenant, and captain of a Woburn military company, 1693 to 1724, was in active service against the Indians in the winter of 1704, and commanded his company at that period. He was twice married: His first wife, Sarah died May 31, 1704, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Reed) Walker. He was the father of ten children.
'Captain Edward Johnson ... Some of His Descendants' by Edward Francis Johnson: [12]

He was an ensign, lieutenant, and captain of a Woburn military company, between 1692 and 1724, per tax lists, and a deacon of the church. He appears to have succeeded his father, Major William Johnson, as captain of the local company, in 1700. He commanded the company in the winter of 1704, when Major James Converse, of his regiment, was detaching men for actual service against the Indians, and posting them in the more exposed towns. The snow was so deep that travel could only be effected on snow-shoes. Orders had come to muster 60 men at an hour's notice. Converse did what he could by sending his lad to Capt. Johnson, and other officers, with orders to raise the above number, notwithstanding there were not snow-shoes enough in the town, by one third, to supply a force of this size.
Edward Johnson was born 12 Oct 1687 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States to Edward Johnson and Sarah (Walker) Johnson. [5]
