John Chase and Ann Arnold of Newport, RI By Dorothy Drake May 26, 2010 at 10:44:28

I'm reporting here the results of my research on this couple because familysearch.com had an entry claiming that this couple were the parents of

Almy Chase, wife of Thomas Pierce. Many descendants of this latter couple have tried to find out who their parents were to no avail. They were married on Nov 3, 1748 at Trinity Church, Newport, RI, and had 7 children in either RI, MA or CT, whose birth or baptism records have not been found either.

At some point, ca 1762, along with other New England Planters, they and their children migrated to Nova Scotia, living mainly in Shelburne County.

The report that Almy Chase was the daughter of John Chase and Ann Arnold is suspect without dates, places and source confirmation. What I have found on this couple, mainly from

Annals of Trinity Church, Newport, RI (online) pages 50-56,

is that John was referred to as "Captain", he was a vestryman of the Church in 1731 and so lived nearby at the time he and his wife were having their own children, and he was trusted with records of the Church, and with helping to make decisions for the Church.

From other public records it is revealed that John Chase was born in 1681 Portsmouth, RI, married Ann on 20 Sept 1713 at Trinity Church, Newport, and she was born 14 July 1696, dau of Benedict Arnold Jr. and Sarah Mumford.

Their children were:

Sarah, b 29 Sept 1718 in Portsmouth, married a Griffith

Elizabeth, b 10 Mar 1720, was alive in 1746

Samuel, b 30 July 1722, married Freelove Lippitt

John Jr., b 1 Nov 1726

William, b 1 Jan 1728

I am not certain when Capt. John Chace died but it must have been after 1732 as that was the last record for him in the Church Annals. At some point Ann Arnold Chase married second a man named Scott.

Because the names Samuel, Elizabeth and William appear among Capt. John's children, I believe that he was a grandson of William Chase and Elizabeth Holder of Yarmouth, MA.

William did have a son named Samuel and it is this man I would check next to see if he in fact had a son John bc 1681.

I hope this helps someone.Dot
