ANCESTRY OF THE FOX FAMILY OF RICHLAND AND LEXINGTON COUNTIES, SOUTH CAROLINA BY JOSEPH E. STEADMAN, SR. AND COLLECTION OF FOX DATA BY SHIRLEY FAUCETTE (PART II ANCESTORS IN ENGLAND)
(2). He married about 1625, his wife evidently being EIizabeth Convers (sister of John Convers subsequently mentioned herein), and became the father of the children named in item (9) below.
(3) He was the John Fox, Sr., who on 7 March 1639 witnessed the will (probated 26 March 1640)-of Alexander Comber (alias Conver), Citizen and wood-monger of London, who gave bequests of 20 shillings to each of his cousins Isabell Fox and John Fox (Jr.). - (C. A. Converse - Converse Family, page 882.)
(4) He was the John Fox, "merchant trading to Virginia" and Commander of the "Whitehorse and Currycombe" , who complied with the order of the Committee of the Admiralty, dated 8 August 1650, that "merchants trading to Virginia" go in companies to secure their ships against the enemies of the Commonwealth, this being during the rule of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector. - (Va. Mag. of H. & B., Vol. 17, 1909, page 142.)
(5) He was the Captain John Fox, Commander of the "Thomas and Anne", who is named in the will (dated 2 Nov. 1653; probated 1 May 1654) of John Convers as his loving friend, and overseer and lawful attorney "to receive all my debts in Virginia and to dispose of this my cargo of goods in the ship called the Thomas and Anne, - and to choose another attorney, or more, to help him to manage this business -". In pursuance of the authority to choose another attorney, as shown by Deed Book II, pages 98-99, for Essex County, Va., Francis Cantor (Carter?) was lawful attorney for Captain John Fox, Commander of the "Thomas and Anne".
John Convers also bequeathed to Captain John Fox L5 (for the purchase of a ring) and other items, and he bequeathed to Mrs. Elizabeth Fox 20 shillings (for the purchase of a ring). John Convers apparently was the father of Alexander Comber (alias Conver) mentioned in item (3) above. - (C. A. Converse - Converse Family, page 60-61; Sherwood - American Colonists in English Records, 2nd Series, page 149; Waters - Genealogical Gleanings in England, II, page 1030-l.)
(6) He was the John Fox who is mentioned as Commander of the "Thomas and Anne" during 1655-1656. - (W. & M. Qrtly., Vol. 20, page 187. and Vol. 21, page 259.) One Henry Cox (a London merchant) arrived in London in May 1655, having come from Virginia in the "Thomas and Ann" commanded by John Fox. His business was "to make sale of the Tobacco he brought over with him, and likewise to fit himself for a return as he shall see cause". Some late writers of articles on the Fox family have erroneously identified this Henry Cox as Henry Fox (b. ca. 1650) and wondered - "Did he travel with his father?" It is obvious that the answer is "no" as relates to the foregoing.
(7) He was the John Fox, Mariner (sic),of Stepney parish in county Middlesex, England, who in 1659 "sent greetings" and ordered that all debts due him in Virginia be collected, and appointed Mr. Jonathan Newell to "receive" and recover the same. The order, dated April 1, 1659, evidently was written in England incident to the retirement of Captain Fox as a "mariner" and was brought to Virginia by his son John Fox, Jr., as mentioned in item 5. (2) below. - (York County, Va., Record Book, 1657-1663, page 148; Ellen M. Cocke - Some Fox Trails in Old Virginia, page .)
(8) He was the John Fox of Wapping Wall (in Stepney Parish), County Middlesex, England, whose nuncupative will was probated in 1665. - (Canterbury Wills, 1661-1670.)
(9) Though the forementioned pedigree chart of the family of "Fox , of Great Missenden" recites nothing of him except that he was "sonne and heire of Henry", he married Elizabeth Convers, as mentioned in item (2) above.
