Capt. John Minor, Sr.

John was in part educated by the Colony as a missionary and interpreter for the Indians in the many troubles and treaties with them. In 1658, he moved to Stratford, Conn., where he married and raised a large family. He served ten years as Town Clerk and was a leading figure in the community.

A large difference of religious opinions arising in the church of which he was a Deacon, he along with a number of others, requested the General Court to grant them a tract of land where they might locate a new settlement. Gov. Winthrop, affected with the unhappy controversy and animosities subsisting in the town, advised that Mr. Walker (the clergyman representing the group opposed to Israel Chauncy, the other clergyman involved in this religious controversy) and his church and people should remove, and that a tract of land for the settlement of a new town should be granted for the encouragement and accommodation. Accordingly, we find on record, 9 May 1672 the following grant:

"This Court grants Mr. Sam'll Sherman, Lnt. Wm. Curtice, Ens: Joseph Jordan and John Minor, Themselves and associates, liberty to erect a plantation at Pomperoage, provided it doeth not prejudice any former grant to any other plantation or perticurler person; provided an other honest inhabitants off Stratford have liberty to joyne with them in settling there, and that they enterteine so many inhabitants as the place will conveniently inerteine, and that they settle there within the space of three yeares."[3085894.ged]

BIOGRAPHY: JOHN MINER was baptized on 30 Aug 1635 in Charlestown, MA, s
of Thomas. He spelled his name Minor and so did most of his descendants.
On 23 September 1654, John Stanton and John Minor were selected for
teachers of the Gospel to the Indians. Both young men, however,
ultimately left their studies. In 1658 he moved to Stratford, CT where he
married Elizabeth BOOTH, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth of Stratford,
on 19 Oct 1658. They settled in what is now Woodbury, CT in 1673 where he
was town clerk for 30 years before dying there on 17 September 1719. She
died on 24 October 1732.

John and Elizabeth settled first in Stratford, CT, and moved on to
Woodbury, CT, in 1682. John served as Deputy for Stratford, Oct 1676, and
for Woodbury Nov 1683., May and Oct 1684, May and Oct 1685, May and
Oct1686,
May and Jun 1687, May 1689, May 1692, Oct 1695, May 1696, May 1697,
Oct1698,
May 1703, Oct 1705 May and Dec 1707, May and Oct 1708, May and Jun
1709,and
May 1710. He was appointed Captain of the Woodbury Train Band, May 1684;
Commissioner (Justice) for Woodbury, 1679-1687, 1689-1697; and a Justice
for Fairfield County from 1698 until his death in 1719.
He served for many years as an Indian interpreter.
John and Elizabeth were the 4GG of Ulysys GRANT.

He was also a surveyor, a necessaryand important character in a new country. All the Indian deeds in this region were executed before him, from his being able to act as interpreter. He was town-clerk of Stratford for ten years from 1666, with the exception of a year, and held the same office in Woodbury for thirty years from its beginning. he was also, for twenty years, almost always a member of the General Court, held an influential position there, and was frequently appointed on committees for the composing of serious differences and the solving of difficult questions. Early in life heacquired a good knowledge of the Indian dialects, and conversed in them with ease and fluency. In consequence of this, the rulers of the Colony wished to prepare him for a preacher of the gospel to the Indians. In accordance with which desire, the General Court, Sept. 14th, 1654, expressed by positive action, ::"Whereas, Notwithstanding former provision made for the conveyance of the knowledge of God to the Natives amongst us, little hath hithertobeene attended through want of an able Interpreter, this Courte beingearnestly desirous to promote and further what lyes in them a worke of that nature, wherein the glory of God & the euerlasting welfare of those poore, lost, naked sonnes of Adam is so deeply concerned, doe order that Thomas Mynor, of Pequott shall bee wrott unto this Courte & desired that hee would forthwith send his sonne John Mynor to Hartford, where this Courte will provide for his maintenance & schooling, to theend hee may bee for the present assistant to such elder, elders or others, as this Courte shall appoint, to interprett the things of God toye as hee shall bee directed and in the meane time fitt himselfe to be instrumentall that way as God shall fitt & incline him thereunto forthe future."(1 - Trumball's Col. Rec., 265.))" :Upon the 23d of Sept., 1654, the subject was brought before the Commssioners of the United Colonies, and they enacted, ::"Vpon a motion made to ye Commissioners by Capt Cullick from the Generall Courte of Connecticott, to take into yr consideration ye instruction of ye Indians in theire Jurisdiction, in ye knowledge of God, andtheir desire yt John Minor might be entertained as an interpreter, tocommunicate to ye said Indians those instructions weh shall be delivered my Mr Stone, Mr Newton, or any other allowed by the Courte, and allso yt ye said Minor may be further instructed and fitted by Mr Stone to bee ameete instrument to carry on the worke of propagating ye Gospel to ye Indians, ye Commissioners conceiving ye said propositions to be much conducing to ye propogating yt hopeful work, doe desire ye Magistrates of Connecticott to take care yt ye said Minor bee entertained at Mr Stones, or some other meet place, and they shall order yt due allowance bee made for his dyet and education out of the Corporation Stock."(2 - Rec. U. Colonies.) :Under this action, both John Minor and John, son of Thomas Stanton, were received and kept at school and college for two or three years. Minor lived with Mr. Stone for some time after, and acted as interpreterfor him when he preached to the Indians. But he did not follow out the plan of his patrons. What induced him to turn his attention to otheraffairs, does not appear. he became, however, an honorable and usefulcitizen, turning his knowledge of the Indian tongue and his educationto good account. He died at an advanced age, and was buried in the south-west part of the ancient burying ground, but no stone remains to mark the spot - naught save a numerous posterity sleeping around him."
