Dick Zieman 2006-11-09 19:27:09 Thank You! for the unusual and accurate posting of Peyton 1798! Just checked the obvious, and although I do not recognize your name, you are a member of The Randolph Board. Who else would cite Wassell, eh? For the public record, here are a pertinent set of notes from Bille Harris:
2. JOHN RANDOLPH
According to Grady and Horace, John was born Chesterfield County in 1759, (I have seen dates for his birth as early as 1751) married Sarah Whittington 1785, then her niece Mary in 1794. They left Greensville County about 1804, went to Roane County, Tennessee about 1807-9, then to Warren County, to Rutherford County by 1810, to Wilson by 1812, bought/sold a lot in Lebanon. John went to War and died in Mobile, Alabama at Camp Russell in 1815. Sometime before arriving in Roane County, Mary died and he married Rebecca Dawson Martin. He fathered five children – Grief, Lavania, Peyton W., Rebecca and John Green. This is according to Grady and Horace. Wassel has his wife as Mary Whittington and gives no other wife(s).
From the Kelsey book, there was a 1906 article in the Times Dispatch which credited the family genealogy to John Randolph of Roanoke, and there was a column by Mrs. William E. Love, granddaughter of John Green Randolph, son of Capt. John Randolph of Lebanon, Tennessee. He was in the war of 1812 and died at Mobile, Alabama, and is buried there. He married a Miss Dawson of Lebanon and their sons were Grief, Peyton and John Green Randolph. John Green served two years as a volunteer under General Jackson in the War of 1812 and afterwards three years in the regular army guarding the frontier of Georgia, Alabama and Florida. She said she found records that Grief (son of John who was the son of Grief and Mary Eppes Randolph) was in Wythe County, Virginia, and that this John Randolph (son of Grief and Mary Eppes) married a Miss Whittington and they had a son Grief born near Wytheville in 1781 and the Grief married Nancy Anderson of Rutherford County, Tennessee and had sons Thomas W. and John Lewis. (whew, sorry for such a long sentence.)
So there you have information from Wassel, Grady, Horace and the Kelsey book.
As some of you have probably read, there’s been discussion of the contents found in two Bibles, one of Harrison Randolph of Rutherford County, Tennessee, and one of John Randolph of Wilson County, Tennessee. Harrison was the son of Edward Randolph and Edward was the son of William and Mary Isham Randolph of Turkey Island. To restate the contents of the John Randolph of Wilson County, Bible:
