brief biography and family
From an unidentified source:
Captain Joseph Mather was the second son of Captain Timothy Mather and was born in Lyme, Connecticut on February 23, 1713. He married Joanna Matson on December 7, 1756. They had five children, one girl and four boys. Captain Mather is buried at the Duck River Cemetery in Old Lyme, Connecticut. He died on February 5, 1788, aged 76 years. He was a veteran of the French and Indian War where he then served as a Lieutenant in the militia. His older brother was Captain Timothy Mather, the same name and rank as his father, and his grave is marked with a DAR stone proclaiming him a veteran of the above-mentioned war. Joseph's remains lie among many from the Mather family who served as militia in America's earliest years. A privately published list of tombstone inscriptions is housed in the Lyme library. It makes note of the fact that there was a "veteran flag" at his grave when the work was compiled.

Date and place of birth have also been (erroneously?) reported to be February 23, 1713 <attestation unknown, conflicts with his Find A Grave memorial>.
