William McDaniel lived in Halifax County, VA in the mid to late 1770’s. He was employed as a merchant in Halifax Co., VA in 1750 and was licensed to sell and peddle under the security of Michael McDaniel in 1753. He received land grants in Halifax Co., VA of 370 acres in 1756, 1,000 acres in 1760, 152 acres in 1761 and 285 acres in 1764. He was given power of attorney by this brother Michael in 1757. "McDaniel's mill was on the Bannister." (River in Halifax Co., VA) Deed Book 3, p.216 Halifax Co., VA: deed between James L Roberts and Wm. McDaniel states William was living on 1/2 acre lot, known as lot 86, on Main St. in Toytonsburg. 1760-61 Halifax Co., VA Deed Book 4 states Wm McDaniel living on N side of Mountain St. (lot 112) in Peytonburg. He purchased this lot and two others for three pounds in 1763. William was made Captain of Company under John Donelson who was made Colonel of the Militia in Halifax Co.,VA 1767-1770. In November 1759, Daniel Obarr sold to William McDaniel, merchant of Halifax County, 400 acres.

In 1764, 1765, and 1768 William appears on a colonial poll list for Halifax County. He also appears on the list of voters in the election of Burgesses for Halifax County in 1764 and 1765.

On 27 May 1771, William (then living in Halifax County) sold 606 acres in Pittsylvania County to John Wimbash, "which said Tract is part of 3,620 acres Granted said William McDaniel by patent bearing date 10 Jul 1766 . . . along the County line." Johnson McDaniel was a witness and Ann McDaniel relinguished her right of dower

Also on 27 May 1771, William sold to Wimbash five lots in the town of Peytonsburg in Pittsylvania County. "one other Corner lott . . . on which the said ordinary house Stands where said William McDaniel formerly lived . . . and one other Corner Lott . . . on which the Store House formerly occupied by said William McDaniel Stands opposet to said Ordinary house." Again, Johnson McDaniel was a witness and Ann McDaniel relinguished her right of dower.

On 28 Feb 1772 William purchased from Alexander Caldwell, 300 acres in Pittsylvania County on the south side of the Bannister River. This land would later be willed to his son, Clement.

ABSTRACTS OF WILLS OF WILLIAM AND ANNE McDANIEL William McDaniel, resident of Halifax County, VA, will written 14 Feb 1777, proved 16 Jul 1778. Names: wife Anne; sons John deceased, William, Clement, James Smith, Collan, Joel; daughters Chloe, Nancy, Polley, Catharine; grandsons William and Johnson (of John). John was referred to as William's eldest son and James Smith, Collan, Joel, Nancy, and Polly as his five youngest children. William signed the will. [Smith was his wife Anne's maiden name.]

Anne McDaniel, will written 21 Sep 1794, proved 19 Jan 1795. Names: children William, Clement, Chloe, James Smith, Collan, Nancey, Polley, and Joel; granddaughter Anne Smith McDaniel, daughter (of Clement). Anne made her mark in the form of a printed letter "A." Two of the witnesses were James McDonald and Absolom McDonalld. A third witness looks like Abselm Donalld.

William appears to have owned considerable property. 800 acres "out of the tract I now live on lying on both sides of Rye Creek" went to his son William. A 300-acre plantation along the Bannister River went to Clement. 200 acres on Polecat Creek went to Chloe. 500 acres "out of the tract I now live on" went to James Smith. 500 acres "out of the said tract I now live on" went to Collan. 500 acres comprising "the plantation whereon I now live" went to Joel. Finally, two additional tracts which he owned in Pittsylvania County, 300 acres on Pigg River and 482 acres on Sandy Creek of Dan River, were reserved for the payment of William's debts. In all, William left 3,582 acres of land.

William's will was dated 14 Feb 1777 and probated in Halifax County, Virginia on 16 July 1778. In it he mentions his wife Anne and all of their children. The family farm was divided with the house and 500 acres going to Anne. William recieved 800 acres, "lying on both sides of Bye Creek," and James Smith, Collin and Joel each received 500 acres. Clement recieved the 300 acre Bannister farm and Chloe 200 acres on Polecat Creek. The slaves (40 total) were divided among Anne and the children. The five youngest were named as James Smith, Collin, Nancy, Polly and Joel. Nancy and Polly were to receive 50 pounds each when of lawful age or eighteen. Two tracts of land, 300 and 482 acres, in Pittsylvania County on the Sandy Creek of the Dan River was to be sold for the payment of debts, etc. The children of Johnson (deceased) had already received an equal part by Deed of Gift and were excluded from the will. Catherine had received her share at the time of her marriage and was also excluded.

McDaniel, Ann - Clement McDaniel, extr James Smith McDaniel has a brother Clement McDaniel in Pittsylvania Co. and his mother Ann McDaniel died there. Her will is recorded in Pittsylvania County Virginia Court Records, Will Bk 10 p 112, jan 19, 1795. In the will she list her children; Joel, William Clement, Chole, James Smith, Collan,Nancy and Polly. There is no mention of her husband by name. Ann McDaniel’s maiden name may have been Smith, as James’s middle name is Smith and William Clement name a daughter Ann Smith McDaniel. This will was witnessed by James McDonald and Absolom McDonald, which may have been McDaniel as they interchange.

In the name of God Amen. I William Mc Daniel of Halifax County finding myself in a declining State of Health but of sound memory thanks be to God for the same and reflecting on the mortality of this life do by these presents make my last will and testament in manner and form following:

First and principally I recommend my soul to the Almighty God who gave it (To) me and my body to be buried at the disgression of my executors hereafter named.

Item: My just debts being first paid and satisfied, I leave to my loving wife Anne the plantation whereon I now live to be layed off into lots of five hundred acres together with the following Negros namely Daniel, Lester, Justis, Janny, Caroline and Lydia together with her third part of my household goods and furniture and stocks and movables of all kinds to be for her support and maintance as long as she lives and after her death to be divided amongst my children as shall be hereafter.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son William eight hundred acres of land out of the track I now live on lying on both sides of Bye Creek where the last quarter is including a hundred acres purchases of William Powell and an entry to right of Joshua Ewell joining McHenry line and bounded as followed, be the same more or less, to wit beginning at a new corner joining Luke Williams line. Thence a new line a straight course the head of a small stream that runs into the said Creek (Bye Creek) below the little Barn on the South side of the said Creek below the mouth of a branch that empty into the said creek on the North side opposite to the said little barn thence astride course of Robert Halls line together with the following Negros and all the stock he now claims, Nero, Simon, Mack, Lucy, and David. To have and to hold the said land and Negros to my said son William and his heirs and assigns forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son Clement my Bannister Plantation containing three hundred acres more or less together with the following Negros namely Old Dick, Betty, young Dick, Hector, and Bettys son Sam together with the stock he now claims to have and to hold the above said land and Negros to him and his heirs and assign forever.

Item: I give and bequeath to my son Collan Mc Daniel five hundred acres out of the said tract I now live an(d) joining his brother William's line and Johnson line and Robert Hall's line including part of the upper quarter of Plantation on the Mill Place together with the following Negros namely Duncan and Dianah, his wife, young Duncan and Darkness Janneys child to have and to hold the above said lands and Negros to him and his Heirs and assigns forever.

And as it has pleased God in his providence to call my oldest son John Mc Daniel out of the world before the date of these presents and he is now no more, his heirs is hereby excluded from having any part of my estate as I have given his children an equal part of my estate with the rest of my children to his two sons William and Johnson in the way of Deed of Gift and also my daughter Catherine is hereby excluded from having any part of my estate as she had her full share when she was married away and as my sons William and Clement and my daughter Chloe have sufficient part of my stock named above and now which they claim and is to have as soon as they become of age and the rest of my stock of all kinds is to be divided amongst my five youngest children namely James Smith, Collan, Nancy, Polly and Joel at my wife Anne's death or sooner as she my said wife shall think fitt and I do hereby appoint her their guardian to manage their estate for them the said five youngest children

and as I have two tracts of land in Pittslyvania County, one on Pigg River containing three hundred acres the other 482 acres on Sandy Creek of Dan River joining Redmund Tallons Land. I do hereby leave the tou (two) tracts of land to be sold for the payment of my just debts together with the crop of tobacco now on hand and what money is due to my from the country of NC and to pay my tou (two) youngest daughters Nancy and Polly (Mary) fifty pounds when they shall become of lawful age or eighteen years old apiece

William McDaniel lived in Halifax County, VA in the mid to late 1770's. He was employed as a merchant in Halifax Co., VA in 1750 and was licensed to sell and peddle under the security of Michael McDaniel in 1753. He received land grants in Halifax Co., VA of 370 acres in 1756, 1,000 acres in 1760, 152 acres in 1761 and 285 acres in 1764. He was given power of attorney by this brother Michael in 1757. "McDaniel's mill was on the Bannister." (River in Halifax Co., VA) Deed Book 3, p.216 Halifax Co., VA: deed between James L Roberts and Wm. McDaniel states William was living on 1/2 acre lot, known as lot 86, on Main St. in Toytonsburg. 1760-61 Halifax Co., VA Deed Book 4 states Wm McDaniel living on N side of Mountain St. (lot 112) in Peytonburg. He purchased this lot and two others for three pounds in 1763. William was made Captain of Company under John Donelson who was made Colonel of the Militia in Halifax Co.,VA 1767-1770. He died possessed of sufficient estate to pay all his debts. William McDaniel is his administrator. " In his will William named enough of his heirs to establish him as the progenitor of this branch of the McDaniel family. In that will he also named his slaves: "Daniel, Lester, Justee, Fanny, Caroline,Nero, Simon, Lucy, David, Old Dick, young Dick, Hector, Betty and her son Sam,Lukee, Febe, Robert, Manuel, Milly, Sucky, Nat, Duncan, Dinah his wife, young Duncan, Darkness, Jenny's child, Frank, Caroline, Rachel, Joe, Lucy, Dave, Tanny, Peter, Jenny, Julius, Lydia and ?

ABSTRACTS OF WILLS OF WILLIAM AND ANNE McDANIEL William McDaniel, resident of Halifax County, VA, will written 14 Feb 1777, proved 16 Jul 1778. Names: wife Anne; sons John deceased, William, Clement, James Smith, Collan, Joel; daughters Chloe, Nancy, Polley, Catharine; grandsons William and Johnson (of John). John was referred to as William's eldest son and James Smith, Collan, Joel, Nancy, and Polly as his five youngest children. William signed the will. [Smith was his wife Anne's maiden name.]

William appears to have owned considerable property. 800 acres "out of the tract I now live on lying on both sides of Rye Creek" went to his son William. A 300-acre plantation along the Bannister River went to Clement. 200 acres on Polecat Creek went to Chloe. 500 acres "out of the tract I now live on" went to James Smith. 500 acres "out of the said tract I now live on" went to Collan. 500 acres comprising "the plantation whereon I now live" went to Joel. Finally, two additional tracts which he owned in Pittsylvania County, 300 acres on Pigg River and 482 acres on Sandy Creek of Dan River, were reserved for the payment of William's debts. In all, William left 3,582 acres of land.

The Will for William McDaniel probated 16 July 1778 gives the following information: Wife: my loving wife "Anne". Ten Children are mentioned (given in order mentioned): William, Clement(son), Chloe, James Smith McDaniel, Collan(Collin), Nancy, Polly, Joel McDaniel,Johnston McDaniel(eldest son deceased), and daughter Catherine who had been "married away" and had already received her "share".

Anne McDaniel was appointed gaurdian of the five youngest children who were not yet of age. They were: James Smith, Collin, Nancy, Polly and Joel.

Forty slaves are mentioned by name in this will.
