About Captain Minnie May Hill

Daughter of Isaac V Mossman & Martha Eleanor 'Nellie' Jackson; wife of Charles Oliver Hill; mother of Herbert W. Hill.

After her marriage to Charles Hill, she received her Master's License to operate steamboats (01 Dec 1886) and was the first woman captain on the Columbia River, and the only woman captain in the Northwest until 1907.

Her husband also captained steamboats and in 1889 the couple purchased their own steamboat, the Governor Newell, which they operated together on the Columbia River with Minnie as captain and Charles as engineer.

Minnie resided in San Francisco and died at her home located at 2490 Greenwich Street, leaving behind sisters Mrs. Ida Yeager, Mrs. Aimee Redmond, Mrs. Lottie DeVaull and one brother, Frank Mossman.
