Simon Ray and his stepfather Peter George were among the original purchasers of Block Island in 1660. In the early years of the settlement, he and James Sands were the most prominent people on the island. In 1687/8 he was appointed a justice of the General Quarter Sessions and the Inferior Court of Common Pleas at Newport.

THIS MONUMENT Is erected to the Memory of SIMON RAY Esquire One of the original Proprietors of this Isand He was largely concerned In settling the Township And was one of the chief Magistrates and such was his Benevolence That besides the care which he took Of their civil Interests He frequently instructed them In the more important concerns Of our Holy Religion He was deprived of his eyesight many years Cheerfully submitting to the will of God His Life being in this trying Influence As in all others A Lovely example of Christian Virtue He died on at age 102, March 17, 1737
